ICC fears son of Libya's Gaddafi may flee justice (Reuters)

TRIPOLI/BEIJING (Reuters) ? The International Criminal Court said on Saturday that Libya's Saif al-Islam Gaddafi was in contact via intermediaries about surrendering for trial, but it also had information mercenaries were trying to spirit him to a friendly African nation.

U.S. military and government representatives held security talks in neighbouring Niger with local officials in Agadez, which has been a way station for other Libyan fugitives, including another son of Muammar Gaddafi, Saadi. A Reuters reporter saw a U.S. military plane at Agadez airport.

A top Agadez regional official declined to say what the talks with the Americans were about, but spoke of escape plans by Saif al-Islam and former Libyan intelligence chief Abdullah al-Senussi, both wanted by the ICC for crimes against humanity.

"Senussi is being extricated from Mali toward a country that is a non-signatory to the (ICC) convention. I am certain that they will both (Senussi and Saif al-Islam) be extricated by plane, one from Mali the other from Niger," said the official, who asked not to be named.

He said there were at least 10 airstrips in the north of Niger near the Libyan border that could be used to whisk Saif al-Islam out of the country.

However, a member of parliament from northern Mali, Ibrahim Assaleh Ag Mohamed, denied Senussi or Saif al-Islam were in his country and said they would not be accepted if they tried to enter.

The arrival of the U.S. delegation followed remarks by Mohamed Anako, president of Agadez region, who said he would give Saif al-Islam refuge. "Libya and Niger are brother countries and cousins ... so we will welcome him in," he said.

The ICC has warned Saif al-Islam, 39, apparently anxious not to be captured by Libyan interim government forces in whose hands his father Muammar Gaddafi was killed last week, that it could order a mid-air interception if he tried to flee by plane from his Sahara desert hideout for a safe haven.

INDIRECT CONTACTS

The ICC's comments offered some corroboration of reports from Tripoli's National Transitional Council (NTC) leaders and African neighbours that he has taken refuge with Tuareg nomads in the borderlands between Libya and Niger.

"There are some people connected with him that are in touch with people connected with us ... it's through intermediaries," ICC Prosecutor Luis Moreno-Ocampo told Reuters in an interview during a visit to Beijing.

"We have some information that there is a mercenary group trying to help him to move to a different country, so we are trying to prevent this activity," said Moreno-Ocampo.

"We are also working with some states to see if we can disrupt this attempt. Some of them are South Africans allegedly."

Moreno-Ocampo said the ICC was not making any deal with Saif al-Islam but was explaining through the contacts that he had to face trial because he had been indicted for war crimes. "He says he is innocent," said the prosecutor.

However, surrender is only one option for Saif al-Islam.

The Gaddafis befriended desert tribes in Niger, Mali and other poor former French colonies in West Africa. Other African countries received Libyan largesse during the 42-year rule of Gaddafi, a self-styled African "king of kings".

France, a backer of February's revolt against Gaddafi, reminded African states of their obligations to hand Saif al-Islam over to the international court.

"We don't care whether he goes on foot, by plane, by boat, by car or on a camel, the only thing that matters is that he belongs in the ICC," said Foreign Ministry spokesman Bernard Valero.

Niger, Mali, Chad and Burkina Faso, a swathe of arid states to the south of Libya, are all signatories to the treaty that set up the ICC. Algeria, which took in Saif al-Islam's mother, sister, brother Hannibal and half-brother Mohammed, is not a signatory. Nor is Sudan or Zimbabwe.

AFRICAN MERCENARIES

As well as enjoying protection from Tuareg allies who traditionally provided close security for the Gaddafis, Saif al-Islam may be in the company of mercenaries from elsewhere in Africa, including possibly South Africa, NTC officials say.

A South African newspaper, in an unconfirmed report, said South African mercenaries were working to fly him out.

A bodyguard who saw Saif al-Islam as he fled last week from one of the last pro-Gaddafi bastions near Tripoli told Reuters that he seemed "nervous" and "confused". He escaped even though his motorcade was hit by a NATO air strike as it left Bani Walid on Oct. 19, the day before his father died in Sirte.

Three of Saif al-Islam's brothers were killed in the war.

The arrest or surrender of Saif al-Islam would bring a new prominence for the nine-year-old ICC, whose highest profile suspect to date is Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir, who remains defiantly in office, defended by many fellow Africans.

Following Gaddafi's killing, probably by fighters who filmed themselves battering and abusing him, Western allies of Libya's new leaders urged them to impose respect for human rights.

NTC leaders would like to run their own trials, but acknowledge that their writ barely runs in the deep south.

NATO countries, now winding up a mission that backed the revolt, have expressed little enthusiasm for hunting a few individuals across a vast tract of empty continent.

Saif al-Islam was once seen as a liberal reformer, architect of a rapprochement with Western states on whom his father waged proxy guerrilla wars for decades. But he responded with belligerent rhetoric after the revolt erupted in Libya.

The ICC accuses him of hiring mercenaries to carry out a plan, worked out with his father and Senussi, to kill unarmed protesters inspired by "Arab Spring" uprisings elsewhere.

Niger's government in the capital Niamey has vowed to meet its ICC commitments. But 750 km (400 miles) north in a region where cross-border allegiances among Tuareg nomads often outweigh national ties, the picture looks different.

Some of the tens of thousands of people who eke out a living in the Sahara, roamed by smugglers and nomadic herders, say there would be a welcome for the younger Gaddafi.

"We are ready to hide him wherever needed," said Mouddour Barka, a resident of Agadez. "We are telling the international community to stay out of this business and our own authorities not to hand him over -- otherwise we are ready to go out on to the streets and they will have us to deal with."

A U.S. military aircraft flew 25 wounded NTC fighters out of Tripoli on Saturday for medical treatment in the United States. Britain has also taken in wounded fighters.

NATO convoy attacked in Afghan capital; 3 die (AP)

KABUL, Afghanistan ? A suicide car bomber struck a NATO convoy Saturday in Kabul, Afghan police said, and an eyewitness said at least three civilians were killed in the attack.

"It was a very strong bomb," said Gulam Saki, an eyewitness at the scene. "Three civilians were killed ? a man, a woman and one child ? and two bodies are still under the vehicles."

Black smoke rose from burning vehicles that firefighters were spraying with water.

Two NATO helicopters landed at the scene to airlift several victims away, according to an Associated Press reporter at the scene.

Other victims were being treated on stretchers that were laid out on the pavement.

Kabul Police Chief Gen. Mohammad Ayub Salangi said the convoy was attacked near Darulaman Palace, the bombed-out seat of former Afghan kings on the southwest outskirts of the capital.

There was no immediate comment from the U.S.-led coalition force.

Injured vet's uncle appalled by police action (AP)

OAKLAND, Calif. ? An uncle of an Iraq War veteran injured when anti-Wall Street protesters clashed with police in Oakland, Calif., said he was appalled by officers' action.

A hospital spokesman says the 24-year-old veteran and Wisconsin native, Scott Olsen, was upgraded to fair condition and moved into an intensive care unit on Thursday.

His uncle, George Nygaard, tells The Associated Press from Wisconsin that Olsen's parents were heading to California on Thursday morning.

Olsen apparently suffered a fractured skull Tuesday in a march with other protesters toward Oakland City Hall. The demonstrators were trying to re-establish a presence in the area of a disbanded protesters' camp when they were met by officers.

It's not known exactly what type of object struck Olsen or who might have thrown it, though the group Iraq Veterans Against the War said officers were responsible for his injury.

Oakland Police Chief Howard Jordan says officials will investigate whether officers used excessive force.

Since he was injured, Olsen's name has become a rallying cry for protesters around the nation. On Wednesday night, demonstrators in New York City, where the movement began last month, marched in support of their counterparts in Oakland.

One movement website, OccupyWallSt.org, declared: "We are all Scott Olsen."

Police investigating rape report at Occupy Glasgow (AP)

LONDON ? Scottish police say they are investigating reports a woman was raped while participating in anti-capitalist protests in Glasgow.

Strathclyde Police said Wednesday that shortly after midnight the force received a report that a serious sexual assault against a 28-year-old woman took place in a tent in the city's George Square.

No arrests have been made.

Protesters inspired by New York's Occupy Wall Street movement have been camping in George Square since Oct. 16.

Occupy Glasgow organizers said in a statement posted online that they were "deeply shocked and saddened by the tragic allegation" of an assault in their camp. The statement said protesters are cooperating with police and working to ensure that everyone at the camp is safe.

Kelly Clarkson as strong as ever on new album (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? Kelly Clarkson is concerned. She released her new album "Stronger" this week and thinks it is her best work yet, but whenever something like that happens she worries nobody will like it.

The 13-song collection finds Clarkson working with a handful of new songwriters on some tunes and continuing to write her own music, which she has done since winning TV singing contest "American Idol" in 2002 at age 20.

While many past "Idol" winners have failed to rise to the heights of superstardom, Clarkson has enjoyed chart-topping success with pop rock singles such as "Miss Independent" and the smash hit, "Since U Been Gone."

But at age 29, the Texas native now has seen both highs and lows in her career, and she knows that even if she thinks her songs are great, the fans are the ultimate decision makers.

"Whenever you love something so much -- and I think this is my best yet -- I think sometimes when I think like that, it means no one's going to like it," she said of "Stronger."

A majority of the songs on the new album find Clarkson at an emotionally charged state. The sound straddles the line between big dance numbers and arena-rock bombast, which has become her signature calling card.

Clarkson calls the album "very intense" and said she felt she had a lot of energy and "soulfulness" to put into it. She likened each song to its "own little rollercoaster ride. Dynamically, vocally, that's what I love doing."

The energy is evident on the first single, "Mr. Know It All," as well as the up-and-down rock moments of "You Can't Win" and the electro-rock arrangements of "Let Me Down."

SONGS ABOUT REAL LIFE

Lyrically, the songs dwell heavily on relationships and empowerment, two subjects that have been highlights her work through the years.

"I love writing and singing songs about real life situations -- especially about relationships," she said. "Everyone wants to feel like they're not alone in a thought. That's the best feeling I get, when I hear a song and it's like 'you just nailed me.' That's the coolest thing in the world, to write something that can be relatable to other human beings."

Over the years, Clarkson's image has been that of an artist who is willing to speak her mind in regards to her creative output, even if it meant going against her label, as she did surrounding 2007's "My December."

And as she has matured, making music seems to be getting easier for Clarkson, mainly because she has not clung too closely to any one genre. In recent years, she's collaborated with country stars Reba McEntire, Rascal Flatts and Martina McBride. She also co-headlined a tour with McEntire in 2008.

"Stronger" continues to reflect her expanded range in musical styles, as evidenced by the dance-pop of "What Doesn't Kill You (Stronger)," charged rock and roll of "Hello" and the power ballad "Standing in Front of You."

Yet, while she may continue to explore different sounds and arrangements throughout her career, her vocals on "Stronger" remain her biggest asset among fans and critics.

In its review for "Stronger," The New York Times described Clarkson as turning into the "Mary J. Blige of pop music," where she's becoming "so good at being wounded that no one wants her to heal."

The Washington Post was less than thrilled, however, calling the album "comforting" but "unchallenging."

Man at center of Ga. megachurch probe speaks out (AP)

ATLANTA ? A North Carolina businessman involved in an investment program at an Atlanta-area megachurch where former members claim they lost their retirement savings says he's taking action to "make things right."

A group of church members is suing New Birth Missionary Baptist Church and its pastor, Bishop Eddie Long, saying they conspired with businessman Ephren Taylor Jr. to defraud the members through "wealth-building" seminars and sermons in 2009.

"In my case and that of my former company, some of the negative effects of a situation with very complex economics impacted businesses, individuals and families despite our best intentions," Taylor said in a statement to The Associated Press.

Attorneys for the church members say in a DeKalb County lawsuit that Taylor urged them to liquidate their retirement accounts, and as a result some lost their life savings.

The U.S. Secret Service and the Internal Revenue Service are also investigating issues surrounding the seminars, which were hosted at the Lithonia-based church which claims 25,000 members, federal officials said.

"Don't assume that I am just another greedy businessman," Taylor said in the statement. "I am taking action to make things right."

Taylor is also named as a defendant in a federal lawsuit filed this month in U.S. District Court in North Carolina.

In that case, lawyers say Taylor made a series of investment presentations for the "Prosperity Fund" at churches in Michigan, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Tennessee.

In the summer of 2008, he spoke at the Democratic National Convention to a youth leaders' summit on his "socially conscious" corporate investment strategy, according to the federal lawsuit.

"Taylor was fortunate to be riding the wave of popularity of young, black, successful men created by then U.S. presidential candidate Barack Obama," the lawsuit states.

New Birth spokesman Art Franklin previously declined to comment on the church's role in the investments.

PFT: Fans go nuts for Tebow after game (video)

Pittsburgh Steelers v Arizona CardinalsGetty Images

Before the season started, we noted that the teams in the AFC North appeared to have an easy schedule.

They face the NFC West and AFC South out of division, which looked soft on paper. ?Usually ?on paper? doesn?t translate to reality, but it did this time around.

The NFC West and AFC South are the two worst divisions in football, despite the presence of the 49ers and Texans. ?ESPN?s John Clayton notes that?if the Jaguars lose tonight, the AFC South will have the worst out of division record in football at 5-16. ?The NFC West is next worse at 6-15.

It shouldn?t be a surprise, then, that every team in the AFC North is .500 or better. The division is home to one of the league?s biggest surprises (Cincy) and the worst 3-3 team we can remember. (Cleveland)

On top of that, the AFC North has the top four defenses in the league according to yards allowed. This is what happens when every team in the division gets to play the Seahawks, Jaguars, Colts, Cardinals, and Rams.

What does it all mean?

The AFC North division champion is almost a lock to get a playoff bye and could get the No. 1 seed. ?Second place in the division is very likely to go to the playoffs, and perhaps the Bengals could hang around the wild card race longer than expected.

So much of the NFL comes down to schedule, but it?s rarely talked about. We?ve heard a number of times this year how the Patriots won 11 games with Matt Cassel, but no one mentions how they faced one of the softest schedules in football that year.

It?s not like it?s the fault of the Ravens, Steelers, Browns, and Bengals. These things even out. It?s up to them to take advantage while they can.

Which reminds me: Are you ready for some football tonight? A Monday night blowout!

(AP) ? European leaders yet again put off the tough decisions needed to save the continent from its debt crisis but promised Sunday that a comprehensive plan is still coming.

As they dawdled, the danger was rising in an already high-stakes game.

Leaders of the continent's richest countries had unusually stern words Sunday for Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, because many fear his nation could be the next dragged into the debt crisis if it does not make major budget cuts quickly.

That would spell disaster: Europe has rescued three small nations ? Greece, Ireland and Portugal ? but cannot afford to rescue Italy, the eurozone's third largest economy. Analysts say EU leaders, known as the European Council when they meet in Brussels, have to act now to eliminate the possibility of Italy's financial collapse.

"Between now and Wednesday, some members of the European Council have to convince colleagues that their country implements commitments fully," EU President Herman Van Rompuy said after the day's meetings, clearly referring to Italy. On Wednesday, leaders will gather again ? to unveil their solution, they promise.

When asked later what would happen if countries failed to fall in line, he responded: "They will make commitments."

Whether that message was getting through, however, was unclear. "The Italian fundamentals are very solid," Berlusconi told reporters after the 12-hour meeting.

For weeks it's been clear what the 17 countries that use the euro must do: reduce Greece's debt burden so the country eventually can stand on its own, force banks to raise more money so they can ride out the financial storm that will entail, and show that their European bailout fund is big and nimble enough to prevent larger economies from getting dragged into the crisis.

On Saturday, officials said the leaders were nearing agreement on slashing Greece's debts and strengthening the continent's banks, many of which are awash in Greek bonds.

But Sunday, the only solid detail to emerge from three days of intense talks was that banks will have to raise their capital buffers much faster than they had planned ? by the end of 2012, instead of 2019.

A European official said Saturday the banks would be forced to raise just over euro100 billion ($140 billion) more for their rainy-day funds, but leaders have not given an official figure.

Instead, at a series of news conferences Sunday, all they could do was promise to deliver big at their next summit.

"There are still problems to solve, but we are moving forward on all subjects," French President Nicolas Sarkozy said as he left Sunday's meetings. "There is a still a lot of work to do ... but there are no more blockages."

Analysts who have seen this pattern for months couldn't help but be skeptical.

"By failing to agree on anything substantial today, EU leaders may have set themselves up for an even bigger fall," said Sony Kapoor, managing director of the Re-Define think tank. "They owe it to Europe to pull a rabbit out of the hat now, but this seems to be beyond them."

Part of the challenge is that European leaders are unable to decide on anything until everything is in place, since each piece of the puzzle affects the others. The value of Greece's bonds can't be slashed until banks are strengthened ? or at least have confidence they can get help from the rescue fund. But some countries are reluctant to strengthen the fund until they know there's a plan to bring Greek debt under control.

Banks ? which have already agreed to take losses on their Greek bonds of some 21 percent ? are already rumbling at suggestions that they might need to double or nearly triple that figure. But without reducing Greece's debt load, the whole plan does not work.

The eurozone also still needs to work out how to most effectively use Europe's bailout fund to make sure Italy and Spain don't see their borrowing costs spiral out of control, as happened with Greece, Portugal and Ireland.

Officials said leaders had reduced seven different proposals down to two options, which are not mutually exclusive. Both options would essentially use the European Financial Stability Facility to insure investors against a first round of losses on bonds from wobbly countries.

But before that can be done, those countries have to convince their partners in the eurozone that their weakness is only temporary and they can get back into shape soon.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel and France's Sarkozy came out with particularly strong words for Italy.

"We made it very clear that Italy is a big and important partner for the euro area and that everything needs to be done to live up to this responsibility," Merkel told reporters after the two met with Berlusconi.

"Trust does not just come from a firewall," she added. "Italy has great economic power but Italy also has a very high overall debt level. And that was to be taken down in the coming years in a credible way."

The stern tone reflected the seriousness of Europe's problems, which have roiled financial markets in recent months and been blamed for slowing economic growth across the globe.

Worst off, of course, is Greece, which is reeling from repeated rounds of budget cuts, job cuts and new taxes that have sparked near-daily strikes and even riots. The country is looking at a fourth year of recession and unemployment has hit a record of 16.5 percent.

"This burden ... is insufferable," Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou told reporters as he urged leaders to solve the crisis. "It must be lightened so we can breathe."

I'm thinking about starting a roleplay based in the chrono universe, but before I can proceed, I'd like to establish a support base for such a project, all those interested should leave a comment expressing support for chrono trigger and or chrono cross. The roleplay will feature multiple settings and alternate timelines and a new one(2012). Depending on what time line you choose, may effect which classes you will have access to(makes sense). I also need a co-gm and writers, to help organize and frame some of foundation for the story. The thing I was to convey most with the story is a sense of continuity and purpose. I'm open to suggestions and ideas and If I like it enough it will be amended into the story, so don't be afraid to leave feedback.

There will be a few class options I have in mind for characters to choose that are based off pre-existing models.

Classes

Magus- There are those who spend their lives poring over ancient tomes and texts, unlocking the power of magic, and there are those who spend their time perfecting the use of individual weapons, becoming masters without equal. The magus is at once a student of both philosophies, blending magical ability and martial prowess into something entirely unique, a discipline in which both spell and steel are used to devastating effect. As he grows in power, the magus unlocks powerful forms of arcana that allow him to merge his talents further, and at the pinnacle of his art, the magus becomes a blur of steel and magic, a force that few foes would dare to stand against.
Weapons that can be used with this class: Scythe, Spear, Bow, Staff

Adventurer -A jack of all trades and a master of none, you are an Adventurer! Adventurers can adapt to many situations with great ease. A great starting class if you're not sure how you want to specialize.Though they lack any specific skills or strengths, this serves as their only real weakness, as otherwise Adventurers are well-rounded in all areas of combat. They have access to some light and dark magic but they'll never be considered experts in any trade. This class is inspired by Toma the Adventurer.
Weapons available to this class: All

Swordmaster(chrono's class)- Swift and deadly, Swordmasters or Master Swordsmen silently roam the earth in search of the strongest warriors to test their skills against. These sword masters make use of offensive magic to aid them in battle and augment their already astounding power. While these warriors may be quiet out of battle, the access to the spellblade ability makes them ferocious and energetic fighters in battle. In fact, they have been known to swiftly and mercilessly shred their foes before their enemies even aknowledge that their defense has been breached. However, most of the time these agile warriors are peaceful and maintain their composure. Indeed, when out of battle, it is quite rare for these warriors to get angered, and they are most often seen in a state of peace and tranquility. These warriors will often meditate to harness the energy within their body and bring their wild mind to a calm state of equilibrium. By focusing these energies, Iron Blademasters are able to unleash blasts of power from their sword and fists. Chrono and Slash are examples of featured Swordsmasters.
Weapons available to this class: Fist, Katana, Sword, dual swords.

Genius- You are the Gear Enchanter, a cunning warrior skilled with weapons, offensive elemental magic, and mechanics. By fusing magic and engineering together Gear Enchanters are able to construct powerful enchanted machines capable of wreaking havoc on all their opponents. Magical weapons, cannons, and vehicles are absolutely no trouble for them to build, and they give Gear Enchanters a decided advantage in every battle they fight. By constructing magical airships and tanks, they can quickly move thousands of people across vast stretches of land and also augment both their defensive and offensive capabilities. Geniuses are essential centerpieces for any team.
Weapons available to this class: Guns, Staff, Scythe, knives, whips.

Dragoons- The Dragon Knight is portrayed as a skilled warrior class, usually capable of wearing heavy armor. Its weapons of choice are spears and lances, which it frequently utilizes in an airborne attack. The Dragon Knight signature attack is a long-distance leap into the air. From above, the Dragon Knight thrusts downward with its spearpoint, skewering its foes from above, and causing approximately twice as much damage as a normal horizontal attack. In addition, its speed and skill at handling such potentially unwieldy weaponry allows an experience Dragon Knight to strike multiple times during one combat round.
Weapons available to this class: Spears, Fist, Katana.

Knights- Powerful and noble warriors, Paladins are both masters of weapons and defensive magic. By imbuing their weapons with light magic, War Paladins can easily and effortlessly vanquish any evil or undead foes. Additionally, they excel at defensive spells which they use to enhance the protective power of their shields. The magic of spellcasters has little affect on War Paladins because of the defensive capabilities of their magical shields. These shields also help protect them against any physical attacks, making War Paladins almost impossible to injure. On top of that, they can use their magic to heal themselves or their allies. The combination of high physical power and high defensive magic make War Paladins one of the top classes. Their only downside is that that they can sometimes lack stealth and can be quite slow; however, the strongest War Paladins have increased their agility enough so that it is not a problem in battle. Glenn and Cyrus are well known Paladin Knight.
Weapons available to this class: Bows, Spears, Swords, dual swords, knives.

Royal- A class whose key distinction is belonging to that of high nobility, they have access to the exclusively elusive celestia magic, widely considered to be the most powerful form of magic in existence. They can be considered to be the proper counterpart of the Magus. Marle and Queen Zeal are examples of Royal's.

Weapons: Swords, Bows, knives, staff.

Monster Tamer- Monster Tamers are a group of people who, instead of gaining innate power, learn to bind the souls of monstrous beings and command them to fight in the Tamer's stead. They are often feared by most of the smarter beings among these Monsters, who don't relish the prospect of being an attack dog on a leash for mortal Tamers.

Monster Tamers are most often defined by the Monsters they have at their command. Some choose to have a varied and even haphazard collection, some choose to focus on Monsters of a particular type or subtype, and some choose to go along other themes, such as Monsters with particular schools of spell-like abilities or tough bruisers.

Weapons available to this class: Whips, Guns, bow, spears.

Sentinel- A sentinel can be thought of as a sort of elite policing force whose job it is to watch over time, they are very knowledgeable and well versed in time space theory, established in the future time lines, they carry out the duty of eradicating threats to the space time continuum such as Lavos, capable spell casters and fighters; their ability to use synthesized or fusion magic in the form of dual casting makes them versatile and deadly combatants, however they have a tendency to not be team players, preferring to opt as lone wolves. They can be considered a cross between the Genius and Swordsmaster class. A very powerful and well rounded class.
Weapons available to this class: Gun, Katana, Fist, Knives, Spears, Scythe.

Races

Zeal-A race close to humans in physiology, however they possess a natural gift for magic, believed to be the ancestors of modern humans. Magus and Schala are members of the Zeal race.
Humans- No explanation necessary
Dragovian- believed to have perished some thousands of years in the B.C era , proof of their lineage exists in the form of the Dragovians. A humanoid race of people whose ancestors were reptilians, they excel naturally as Dragon Knights.
Demihumans- Lynx, these are merely human-like
Robot/Androids- Robots possess great constitutions, intelligence, as well as some , they are considered the tanks of all races.
Mystics/Mutants- Originating from the Kingdom of Zeal in Chrono Trigger. Created by powerful Zeal mages as experiments, most Fiends became servants, guards, and sometimes even jesters to their Enlightened Masters Inherently magical beings, some Fiends possess the ability to cast magical spells. Some Fiends are immortal, while others live ordinary lifespans. In addition to this, Fiends carry significant differences physiologically, as there are many different species or sub-races such as Imps, Demons, and Naga. Despite these differences, Fiends are like in that they share the same origin. Flea and Slash are examples of well-known Mystics.

Argue Much? Conflict Levels In Marriage Don't Change Over Time

healthland.time.com:

If you squabble a lot with your sweetie, don't think that things will improve after getting hitched. New research shows that conflict levels don't vary much over the course of marriage. (The good news, conversely, is that if you get along well, you're likely to continue along that same trajectory.)

Oakland protesters defy city order to leave

(AP) ? Hundreds of anti-Wall Street protesters defiantly remained at their campsite outside Oakland's City Hall early Saturday, despite a city order to vacate.

As the 10 p.m. time of the city's ultimatum passed Friday night, Occupy Oakland demonstrators showed no signs of departing as music blasted from the plaza. More protesters arrived with tents as midnight approached.

Earlier, city spokeswoman Karen Boyd said that Oakland gave official notice that the protesters do not have permission to remain overnight and that their encampment is breaking the law. She would not comment on what steps the city would take toward enforcing of the law. There was no indication of significant police presence early Saturday.

Boyd says that protesters can legally demonstrate at the plaza from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.

PFT: Turner takes jab back at Rex

San Francisco 49ers v Detroit LionsGetty Images

Though Eagles and Lions fans understandably disagree, something stinks about the ability of quarterback Mike Vick and running back Jahvid Best to re-enter their respective games on Sunday after suffering possible concussions.? If, as the ?WHEN IN DOUBT, LEAVE THEM OUT? memo sent by the league to all teams before the season states, players should be removed from games if there is ?any suspicion? they have suffered concussions, Vick and Best should have been shut down.

The problem arises from the absence of independent neurologists at games.? ?The team medical staff examines players during games,? NFL spokesman Greg Aiello told PFT via email.? ?The team neurologist is not required to attend games.?

The league relies on independent neurologists when determining whether a player who has been diagnosed with a concussion will be cleared to play.? The thinking is that independent neurologists won?t be influenced by the inherent tension that a team physician experiences when caught between the interests of their patients and the interests of the teams that employ them.? It?s a coveted assignment for doctors, whose practices realize a significant boost when they become hired by an NFL team.? Most doctors don?t want to jeopardize that job by keeping football players from playing football.

It?s arguably more important to have truly independent neurologists available during games, when players possibly can get back on the field despite suffering a possible concussion.

Specifically, independent neurologists should have the power to hold players out of a game until it is determined, by the independent neurologist, that any player with a possible concussion has neither a concussion nor ?concussion-like symptoms.?? The process could be aided by the presence of a safety official in the replay booth, whose duties would include monitoring the live action, replays, and anecdotal evidence from the sidelines for the purposes of flagging players who must be held out until cleared to return by an independent neurologist assigned to each team.

It?s a relatively simple fix that the NFL and its players should welcome, if the league is truly serious about dealing with the dangers of concussions.? During games, doctors wearing polo shirts bearing team logos will be hesitant, when in doubt, to hold players out, especially when the players and the coaches want to get the players back on the field.? The NFL needs to have someone with true independence involved in the process of determining which players should be keep on the sidelines due to concussions (or other potentially serious injuries, like punctured lungs or fractured eye sockets) at a time when the heat of the battle will compel players and coaches to take potentially unnecessary risks ? and to have a dim view of any team physicians who try to stand in the way.

If Eagles doctors had deemed Vick a ?no go? during Sunday?s game with the Redskins and if the Eagles had lost the game without Vick at quarterback and if it later was determined that Vick didn?t have a concussion, the Eagles doctors who contributed to the slide to 1-5 possibly wouldn?t have been Eagles doctors for much longer.? Until that environment changes, with the game-day judgment of team doctors trumped by the discretion of independent physicians, a potentially dangerous loophole will continue to exist.

Former Met Lenny Dykstra pleads to auto theft (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) ? Former New York Mets star Lenny Dykstra pleaded no contest on Wednesday to grand theft auto charges stemming from what prosecutors said was a scheme to lease cars using phony business and credit information.

Dykstra, 48, entered his plea, the equivalent of guilty in California, during a hearing in Los Angeles Superior Court. In addition to three counts of grand theft auto, he also pleaded no contest to one count of filing false financial statements.

The onetime World Series hero faces a maximum penalty of four years in prison when he appears before a judge for sentencing in January.

Dykstra and two associates were accused of running a scheme, starting earlier this year, to lease high-end automobiles from dealerships using fraudulent information and claiming credit through a phony business called Home Free Systems.

Although they were rejected at two dealerships, prosecutors charge, they drove off with three cars from another business.

Dykstra, nicknamed "Nails" during his baseball career, spent more than a decade in the Major Leagues, mostly as an outfielder for the New York Mets and Philadelphia Phillies.

He still faces two additional and unrelated criminal prosecutions. An indictment returned by a federal grand jury in May accuses Dykstra of stealing or destroying some $400,000 in property that was part of his bankruptcy case.

Then in August, he was charged in Los Angeles with exposing himself to a string of women who answered online employment advertisements he posted.

Dalai Lama prays for Tibetans who self-immolated (AP)

DHARMSALA, India ? The Dalai Lama fasted and led prayers Wednesday to honor nine Tibetans who set themselves on fire in protest against Chinese rule, while Beijing criticized the Tibetan spiritual leader's support as inciting "terrorism in disguise."

The 90-minute-long service at the Dalai Lama's Tsuglakhang Temple, in the northern Indian town where he lives in exile, focused on the monks, former monks and a nun who have self-immolated since March in a restive Tibetan area of western China that has been under martial law-type police controls.

Aged in their late teens and twenties, at least five died of their injuries, while the condition of the other four is not known.

At the service, the Dalai Lama led rhythmic prayers for the dead and suffering as Tibetans tended butter lamps. The newly elected prime minister of the Tibetan government-in-exile, Lobsang Sangay, urged China to stop its tight controls on religion in Tibet and called on the United Nations to send fact-finding teams to the Himalayan region.

"We would like to appeal to the Chinese government to immediately stop its repressive policies in Tibet, and to resolve the issue of Tibet through peaceful means," Sangay said.

The prayers in Dharmsala were one of several services held in honor of the Tibetans. Taiwan had them too. In New Delhi, Tibetans protested after a prayer service. Elsewhere, Tibetans and supporters posted messages on Twitter promising to fast for the day. The Dalai Lama's daylong fast was his first since 2008 when Tibetans across western China staged protests in the largest rebellion against Chinese rule in nearly a half-century.

The commemorations underscored how the immolations served to draw attention to the situation in Aba, a Tibetan community which has been a flashpoint for Tibetan unrest. Chinese troops fired on protesting Tibetans in 2008. Since then the area has resembled an armed encampment with riot squads, checkpoints and purges of monasteries ? measures the Tibetans who set themselves on fire were protesting.

In Beijing, the Chinese Foreign Ministry condemned the immolations anew Wednesday but directed special criticism at the Dalai Lama and the prayer services, saying that such support would be an incitement akin to terrorism.

"In the wake of the incidents, overseas Tibet independence forces and the Dalai Lama group did not criticize the cases but on the contrary glorified such cases and incited more people to follow suit," the spokeswoman, Jiang Yu, said at a daily news briefing. "As we know, such splittist activity at the cost of human life is violence and terrorism in disguise."

The lashing out at exiled Tibetans was typical for the Chinese government, which accuses the Dalai Lama of encouraging separatism but rarely acknowledges how its policies may be contributing to unrest.

"Anything they don't like in Tibet is somehow stirred up by the Dalai Lama, and in a sense they seem to not want to take any responsibility for what appear to be spontaneous expressions of deep concern by these young people," said Michael Davis, a law professor at Hong Kong University who writes about Tibet.

Human Rights Watch has said that tightened security has led to a six-fold increase in spending on police, prisons and other parts of the public security apparatus in Aba has risen six-fold since 2002.

In attempts to rein in a Buddhist clergy seen as supportive of Tibetan independence, Beijing has put limits on the numbers of monks and nuns and forced clerics to denounce the Dalai Lama. The attack on religion, a central feature of Tibetan life, makes Tibetans more uneasy at a time that members of the Han Chinese majority are migrating to the region in greater numbers.

Besides the Dalai Lama, many other senior Tibetan clerics fled Chinese rule, establishing monasteries and schools in exile that retain links to the communities they once presided over. Also attending Wednesday's prayer services was Kirti Rinpoche, the exiled head of the Kirti monastery, which has been at the center of troubles in Aba.

In recent days, he has given implied approval of the immolations, saying that sacrificing one's life to defend one's Buddhist beliefs is not considered violent.

"Throughout your successive rebirths, never relax your vigilance in upholding the truth of the Buddha's excellent teaching for a single moment, even at the cost of your own life," Kirti Rinpoche said, citing a Buddhist master, in remarks released by the International Campaign for Tibet, a Washington-based lobbying group.

Simmering troubles at Kirti monastery boiled anew in March when a 21-year-old monk, Phuntsog, set himself on fire on a main street. Authorities imposed a lock-down and launched new indoctrination campaigns on the monastery, causing large numbers of monks to leave, some on their own and others forcibly, according to accounts by exiled Tibetans and support groups.

An anonymous letter from an exiled Tibetan from Aba, also known as Ngaba, and released by the International Campaign said that more than 100 monks and other locals have disappeared and that the immolations were a response to the repressive conditions.

"In short, the occurrence of suicide as protest in Ngaba is because many people there cannot see how to go on living," the letter said. "To have to relinquish our ethnic-national identity and culture is to relinquish the point of living for Tibetans, so the present repressive and punitive policies are literally tearing out the hearts of the Ngaba people."

'Mighty Macs' movie follows same underdog path (AP)

IMMACULATA, Pa. ? Here's a sports fairy tale that never gets old: Underdog team with few resources but a lot of heart beats the odds and comes out on top.

That is what actually happened to the 1971-72 women's basketball squad at tiny Immaculata College.

It's also what happened to "The Mighty Macs," a small-budget movie about the team's improbable national championship that overcame its own obstacles to make it to Hollywood.

The film starring Carla Gugino, Marley Shelton, David Boreanaz and Ellen Burstyn hits theaters Friday.

"We really needed to be patient and believe in the story and the right distribution platform for the story," said Tim Chambers, who wrote and directed the film. "... It was definitely worth the wait."

The true story of the Mighty Macs has always read like a movie script.

It starts in 1971 with a 23-year-old named Cathy Rush. The former high school basketball star was coaching the ragtag team at Immaculata, a struggling Catholic school for women near Philadelphia. She was barely older than her players.

The Macs, who had no home court because their field house had burned down, practiced at local gyms and played all their games on the road. When they earned the 15th seed in the first-ever women's U.S. collegiate championship tournament in 1972, players held raffles and sold toothbrushes to raise money for the trip.

Immaculata upset three teams to reach the finals. There, the scrappy Macs faced off against nemesis West Chester in a nail-biting rematch ? and won. Cue the confetti.

In the following years, Rush was approached many times about making the Macs' Cinderella story into a movie. But every would-be production turned into a pumpkin.

So Rush was understandably wary when Chambers came to her around 2004. But she was won over by his strong backing ? former Philadelphia 76ers president Pat Croce is an executive producer ? and personal connections to the story.

Chambers had grown up in the area and, as a child, saw Rush and the Mighty Macs practice at his Catholic grade school's gym. And he was taught by the same nuns who run Immaculata ? the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary.

"The more I was around him, the more I was convinced that if anyone could do this, he could do it," Rush said.

Filming for "Our Lady of Victory" ? the movie's original title ? began in 2007 at Immaculata and, ironically, in the gym of nearby West Chester University. Chambers cast Katie Hayek, a former University of Miami shooting guard and theater major, as star player Trish Sharkey.

But Hayek was diagnosed with cancer as cameras were set to roll. A wig, tenacious work ethic and rearranged shooting schedule helped mask the effects of chemotherapy, which Hayek said successfully treated her Hodgkin's lymphoma.

Then, just as the $7.5 million production wrapped in 2008, the recession hit. Chambers couldn't find a distributor.

So he took the G-rated movie ? billed as part "Sister Act," part "Hoosiers" ? on the festival circuit for family films. Good reception, but still no bites. Chambers was offered a straight-to-video deal and turned it down. He wanted a shot at the big dance.

Three years after filming ended, Chambers got it. Ocean Avenue Entertainment is distributing "The Mighty Macs" on the 40th anniversary of the team's winning season. Whether it becomes a champ at the box office remains to be seen.

Chambers described the movie as transcending gender and sports to tell a story about "the equality of dreams" ? in this case, that young women in the 1970s were entitled to pursue their passions the same way men did.

The film takes some liberties with details; the nuns who cheered on their beloved Macs probably didn't wear high-top Converse sneakers, as they do in the movie. And Rush didn't have a nun for an assistant coach (Sister Sunday, played by Shelton). But the overall message is faithful to history.

"It's an enjoyable, wholesome story about something that really did happen," said Theresa Shank Grentz, who played on the championship team and is the basis for Hayek's character.

Grentz and the Mighty Macs went on to win the national titles in 1973 and '74 as well. But the basketball program got left behind after the passage of Title IX, which allowed colleges to offer women sports scholarships ? something tiny Immaculata could not afford.

The school began admitting men in 2005 and currently has both men's and women's Division III basketball teams.

Rush, who now runs a string of children's summer camps, was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2008. Grentz became the first full-time women's basketball coach in the nation at Rutgers, later leaving to coach at Illinois. Today, she works as Immaculata's vice president for university advancement.

Teammates Rene Muth Portland and Marianne Crawford Stanley followed similar paths: Portland became the longtime coach at Penn State; Stanley won three championships as coach at Old Dominion, later coaching the WNBA's Washington Mystics.

Rush set the example for them ? and many other women ? to follow their dreams, said Chambers.

"That's a remarkable testament to her, and why she's in the Hall of Fame, and why she's a pioneer in women's sports," Chambers said.

The film premiered in Philadelphia last week.

IPhone 4S Benchmarked, Faster Than All Android Phones (ContributorNetwork)

Apple does not even list the new iPhone 4S' internal technical specs -- RAM, graphics performance, and processor speed -- on the iPhone's "Tech Specs" page. Reports have surfaced, though, which suggest it's basically the same on the inside as an iPad 2. Arnold Kim of MacRumors notes it has the same Apple A5 processor and 512 MB of RAM as an iPad 2, but "is likely underclocked" to 800 MHz compared to the iPad's 1 GHz speed. The underclocking may be necessary in order to fit such a powerful processor into a smartphone chassis (and have reasonable battery life).

So how does an iPad in an iPhone's body stack up to the current crop of Android smartphones and "superphones?" As it turns out, unbelievably well. According to benchmarks compiled by Anand Lal Shimpi and Brian Klug of Anandtech, a stock iPhone 4S outperforms pretty much every phone on the market out of the box.

Graphics -- Rendering Egypt offscreen

The 2.1 version of an app called GLBenchmark forces smartphones and tablets to render graphics onto an offscreen canvas, roughly the size of a laptop monitor. The original iPhone 4 was at the bottom of the benchmarks, rendering the scene at only 11.2 frames per second -- slowly enough to be noticed as choppy. Slightly above it was the Nexus S -- a single-core superphone -- then the LG Optimus 3D, the 10.1 inch Samsung Galaxy Tab, and the Motorola Droid Bionic. The Samsung Galaxy S 2 was the only real standout from the Android pack, but the iPhone 4S beat it handily, rendering the scene at over 70 frames per second compared to about 40. Only the iPad 2 beat it, due to its higher clock speed.

Browser performance

The "Sunspider" Javascript test is a measure of how well a device can handle (non-Flash) interactive web pages. Older smartphones like the original Nexus One and the iPhone 3GS took about 5 seconds to render the test page, while the iPhone 4 beat out even the Galaxy S 2 at 3.5 seconds. The iPhone 4S, on the other hand, took only 2.2 seconds, and was just barely beat out by the 8.9 inch Galaxy Tab (the iPad 2 did not appear in the test results).

Processor speed

Processor benchmarking seemed to confirm the theory that the iPhone 4S is clocked at 800 MHz. Its dual-core processor was benchmarked as having almost double the power of the old iPhone 4, though, which had a single-core 800 MHz processor.

Android devices were not compared in the processor speed benchmarking, but the iPhone 4S beat them all by a mile in every other measurement.

S&P cuts Spain rating by one notch on weak growth (Reuters)

MADRID (Reuters) ? Standard & Poor's cut Spain's credit rating on Friday, sending the euro lower and underlining the challenges facing Europe's big powers as they prepare to meet G20 counterparts over the euro-zone debt crisis.

S&P, whose move mirrored that by fellow ratings agency Fitch last week, cited high unemployment, tightening credit and high private-sector debt among reasons for cutting the nation's long-term rating to AA- from AA.

"S&P underestimates the scope of the unprecedented structural reforms undertaken, which will obviously take time to bear fruit," Spain's Treasury said in a statement for investors on Friday.

Spanish unemployment, running at 21 percent, is the highest in the European Union, reflecting a stagnant economy, the collapse of a decade-long housing boom and cuts aimed at reeling in a public sector deficit which reached 11.1 percent of GDP in 2009.

High yields on Spanish government bonds point to concerns that it could be the next euro zone economy to require a Greece-style bailout and despite an unpopular austerity program, doubts remain that Spain will meet its deficit target of 6 percent of GDP this year.

Furthermore, the decision to shelve Spain's multi-billion-euro privatization plans, mainly due to tough market conditions, has deprived the state of much needed revenues to cut borrowings and leaves little room for maneuver in its public finances.

A senior official told the Financial Times on Friday that meeting the 6 percent deficit target will be "difficult."

"And if the (2011) deficit is above 6.5 percent, it's worrying," the official said.

S&P announced the downgrade as finance ministers and central bank chiefs from the world's 20 biggest economies were due to meet later on Friday in Paris amid pressure to find an urgent and convincing solution to the deepening debt crisis.

"Despite signs of resilience in economic performance during 2011, we see heightened risks to Spain's growth prospects due to high unemployment, tighter financial conditions, the still high level of private sector debt, and the likely economic slowdown in Spain's main trading partners," S&P said.

It also noted the "incomplete state" of labor market reform and the likelihood of further asset deterioration for Spain's banks, and downgraded its forecast for Spanish economic growth in 2012 to about 1 percent, from the 1.5 percent it forecast in February.

Juergen Michels, economist at Citi in London, said the market was still wary of developments in Spain's regional public finances, and was aware that fiscal problems would not disappear any time soon.

The spread on Spanish 10-year government bond yields versus their German counterpart was little changed compared to Thursday, while Spain's blue chip index was also hardly affected by the rating cut.

JOB DILEMMA

A botched labor market reform in 2010 did little to alleviate joblessness that is concentrated mainly amongst younger Spaniards, and a new government after November 20 general elections will be under pressure to tackle the issue.

The center-right People's Party is expected to win the election easily and deepen austerity measures but they have shied away from presenting specific policy measures for fear of eroding public support.

Like Fitch, which also now rates Spain at AA-, S&P signaled further possible downgrades for Spain, saying there was still a risk the euro zone's fourth-largest economy could slip into recession next year, with a 0.5 percent contraction.

The euro dipped in Asian trade after the downgrade, though it still remained on track for its biggest weekly rally since January. It last traded at $1.3753, having shed around a third of cent.

Finance chiefs from outside the euro zone are expected to speak frankly when they meet their European counterparts at Friday's G20 meeting, given impatience growing over the crisis and its implications for the rest of the world.

Canadian Finance Minister Jim Flaherty set the tone late on Thursday, telling reporters before leaving Ottawa that euro zone actions were short of what was needed.

On Thursday, Fitch cut credit ratings or signaled possible downgrades for several major European banks. It downgraded UBS and Royal Bank of Scotland. It also placed Barclays Bank, BNP Paribas, Credit Suisse, Deutsche Bank and Societe Generale on watch negative.

With 2 million user-submitted blogs, it is the largest single blog index in the fashion category, pulling in approximately 3.5 million uniques and 65 million pageviews per month, says Stockholm-based founder and CEO Mattias Svenson. Its audience is, predictably enough, young women obsessed with style: the average visitor is a 22-year-old female who visits 50 times per week, according to Bloglovin's advertising page.

Svenson says the idea for Bloglovin' came out of a coffee meeting with style blogger Carolina Engman in late 2008. During breaks in the discussion, she would pull up dozens of blogs in separate browser windows to see if any of her favorites had been updated -- something that struck Svenson and his co-founder, CTO Patrik Ring, as a process that could be improved.

Two weeks later the pair launched a beta version of Bloglovin', which brought in more than 1,000 signups in its first week. The site's growth has been driven largely by widgets bloggers have posted on their own sites, urging readers to subscribe to them on Bloglovin', says Svenson.

Beyond its visual RSS reader for the web, iPhone and Android phones, Bloglovin' also functions as a discovery vehicle. Users can browse a feed of popular posts by category, such as lifestyle or photography, and see which blogs have built the largest followings on Bloglovin' and/or are quickly amassing them.

The bulk of Bloglovin's undisclosed revenue is advertising. The startup has worked with numerous large brands, including L'oreal, MTV, H&M and Levi's to develop display campaigns, as well as facilitate partnerships with various bloggers. Svenson acts as the go-between for said partnerships, connecting brands with bloggers not only with the largest audience, but also ones that are a good fit for the brand in question.

Svenson says that right now the startup is focused on improving the mobile reading experience, which he doesn't believe is as easy or seamless as it could be.
