M. BASKETBALL | Elis can't contain No. 10 Florida

Gainseville, Fla. ? Playing its last game of the year far from home on New Year?s Eve, Yale rang in 2012 by falling just short of one of the country?s top teams.

Despite an impressive 9-0 start against No. 10 University of Florida (10?2) the Elis (8?4, 0?0 Ivy) could not contain the Gators and fell, 90-70 in front of 9,119 at the O?Connell Center on Florida?s campus.

Two days after starting slowly in a close loss at Wake Forest, the Bulldogs came out on fire against Florida. The Elis got consecutive three-pointers from Austin Morgan ?13, Reggie Wilhite ?12 and Greg Mangano ?12 to open the contest before the Gators responded.

Mangano said that the team emphasized starting strong. But the route to Yale?s quick start was not typical of the team. Head coach James Jones added that although Yale?s first four shot attempts against Florida were from beyond the arc, shooting had not been the main focus coming into the game.

?I tried to make the point that we were going to have to handle the ball,? Jones said about team practice on Friday. That focus seemed to pay off and Yale turned the ball over only 11 times throughout the game.

Despite the Elis' early lead fireworks, Florida head coach Billy Donovan, whose team took the lead for good 5:13 into the game, said he was never worried.

?I liked where we were focus-wise,? Donovan said. ?There are certain times when you are sitting there as a coach and it is nine-nothing and you are annoyed, but I wasn?t really annoyed because I thought we were playing the right way on offense. I felt like we were locked in defensively.?

The Gators responded to their early 9?0 deficit by rattling off a 29-6 run to take control. Although Florida would hold the lead for the rest of the game, Yale pulled within five points with less than two minutes remaining in the first half. But Gator guard Kenny Boynton destroyed Yale?s hopes of a comeback when he connected from long distance on successive possessions. His second three-pointer was part of a four-point play that pushed Florida?s lead back to nine. Jones was then called for a technical following a breakaway dunk by Florida forward Bradley Beal.

?I thought Bradley Beal had traveled,? Jones said. ?I let the referee know.?

Trailing by 11 at the half, the Bulldogs closed the gap to 54-48 with just under 15 minutes remaining. But the Gators pulled away again and stretched their lead to 26 points over the next ten minutes. Although the Bulldogs hit nine three-pointers in the first half, Florida converted eight of its own in the second half.

The Gators also dominated inside, scoring 37 points in the paint. Eleven more Florida points came on the fast break.

Although the Bulldogs could not keep up with the Gators, they received an impressive effort from Mangano, the preseason Ivy League player of the year. The 6?10? forward tied Boynton with a game-high 26 points on only 18 shots and hit four of his six three-point attempts.

?Mangano is a terrific and unique player,? Donovan said. ?I don?t think we?ll face another guy like that? I say this in a very complimentary way; he?s very awkward.? He added that Mangano combines the ability to create space fading away with physical post-play.

Mangano added 15 rebounds during the game, and Morgan scored ten points. Ten Bulldogs scored, but five Gators scored at least nine points.

The Bulldogs return home Jan. 3 to take on Holy Cross.

Dolphins begin search for new coach

Mike Nolan decided against buying a place to live when he came to town two years ago as defensive coordinator of the Miami Dolphins.

"I'm a renter now," Nolan said with a laugh. "It's a complete change in philosophy. I think renting's the way to go nowadays."

He made a good call. The Dolphins face an offseason of big changes, and a lot of players and assistant coaches will be moving on.

General manager Jeff Ireland confirmed Monday that he and owner Stephen Ross have begun their search for a head coach. Tony Sparano was fired Dec. 12, and interim coach Todd Bowles is a long shot for the job. A front-runner has yet to surface.

"Steve Ross and I have a plan in place that is designated to ensure that we identify and interview an outstanding set of candidates for the head coaching position," Ireland said in a statement. "That search has begun and there is no designated timetable. ... Steve and I are excited to embark on this process, and we are confident that it will result in the selection of an outstanding individual who will return the Dolphins to their longtime status as one of the most successful teams in the league."

The status of the franchise has declined dramatically in recent years. The Dolphins have reached the playoffs only once in the past decade, and they've endured three consecutive losing seasons for the first time since the 1960s.

This season Miami lost its first seven games, then played much better and beat the New York Jets on Sunday to finish 6-10.

"Our ultimate goal was to make it into the playoffs and make some noise there, so that's disappointing," Pro Bowl receiver Brandon Marshall said. "Hopefully we can take some of this momentum we've had in this second half and run into next year flying."

It's unclear whether the Dolphins want to hire a college coach, an NFL coordinator or someone with head-coaching experience in the league. Ross is drawn to celebrities and apparently willing to spend big, but competition will be stiff thanks to a slew of vacancies around the league.

Some of those situations are more appealing than the Dolphins, who have been plagued by instability. The next coach will be Miami's seventh since the start of the 2004 season.

The ongoing search for a franchise quarterback is another issue. Newcomer Matt Moore played well after Chad Henne was sidelined by a season-ending right shoulder injury, but with a top-10 pick in the April draft, Miami will be tempted to draft a QB.

Henne, a free agent this offseason, said Monday his shoulder is healing well and he would like to remain with the Dolphins. Given Moore's emergence, that's unlikely.

"I love being down here, and hopefully I get another opportunity," Henne said. "If not, I'll try my luck elsewhere. Obviously I want to be a starter, and I feel I can be in this league."

Heading for retirement is NFL active sack leader Jason Taylor, who decided to call it quits rather than try to break in yet another new coach. Among those certain to return is Reggie Bush, who reached the 1,000-yard rushing milestone for the first time in his first season with Miami.

The Dolphins had trouble with pass protection and pass coverage. Blowing late leads and losing close games became bad habits. Those issues will all be addressed by a new coach, but Bush believes the team needs only few tweaks, not major renovations.

"The chemistry is there. The foundation is laid out," Bush said. "I think whatever coach they bring in will fit right in, and I think we'll be fine."

Perhaps. But the next coach might want to try renting.

Foreign Interests Paying Millions to Sabotage Canada's Energy Industry

Leftist environmental groups again carry water for Islamic supremacists, trying to make sure Canada stays dependent on Middle Eastern oil instead of developing its own.

BREAKING: New ad campaign reveals foreign interests sabotaging Canada?s economy Five Feet of Fury January 2nd, 2012

OurDecision.ca documents puppetmasters behind anti-oilsands lobby

VANCOUVER ? January 2, 2012 ? Foreign special interests are paying millions of dollars to local front groups to sabotage Canada?s energy industry, according to an advertising campaign launched today.

?The federal government?s hearings into the Northern Gateway Pipeline begin next week,? says Kathryn Marshall, spokesman for EthicalOil.org. ?Canadians will be shocked to learn that anti-oilsands lobby groups opposing the project have taken millions of dollars from foreign special interests.?

The ad campaign started this morning on more than a dozen radio stations across northern B.C., and will also appear in ten weekly newspapers over the month of January. Each ad in the series highlights a different Canadian front group being paid by a foreign special interest.

Factual documentation for the ads, as well as an audio clip of the first of five radio ads, can be heard at the website www.OurDecision.ca.

?Whether or not Canada decides to build this pipeline is a Canadian decision, based on Canadian interests ? not the political interests of foreigners or their Canadian puppets,? said Marshall. ?Let?s have a national discussion about this ? but foreigner billionaires and their local lobbyists should butt out.?

Some of the foreign backed anti-oilsands groups highlighted in the ads include:

  • ????? The West Coast Environmental Law Foundation
  • ???? Corporate Ethics International
  • ???? Pembina Environmental Foundation
  • ???? Environmental Defence Canada
  • ???? Ecojustice Canada Society

?This ad campaign is 100% Canadian, paid for through grassroots donations by Canadians only,? noted Marshall. ?We?ll never take money to undermine our country?s national interest.?

Soap Dish: The Year In Review 2011

It is Soap Dish time again and this week I am going to take a look at what went down in the soap opera world in 2011. Quite the interesting year that has everyone asking one major question, what does the future hold for daytime soap operas? Obviously the biggest thing to happen in 2011 was the cancelation of All My Children and One Life To Life. It goes without saying that ABC axing these two shows was the lowest point of the year. Of course there was the short-lived hope for fans that the shows would be revived online, as you know those plans have been scrapped. Along the same lines there is now the question of the fate of General Hospital. It was announced that Katie Couric was getting her own talk show in the fall of 2012 and that leaves many fans fearful that the last ABC soap will soon fade to black as well. The Young and The Restless was on top as always but it wasn?t free from scandal and I am not talking about on screen. Melody Thomas Scott was missing from the show for months and that left a big hole in the [...]

German minister: will stabilize eurozone in 2012 (AP)

BERLIN ? Germany's finance minister says he is confident that Europe's politicians will manage to stabilize the eurozone in 2012 and keep the continent's common currency together.

Wolfgang Schaeuble acknowledged in an interview with business daily Handelsblatt published Friday that major problems that have built up over a long time remain to be tackled in some countries.

However, he added, "I think we will be far enough along in the next 12 months that we will have banished the dangers of contagion and stabilized the eurozone."

Asked whether he could rule out the 17-nation eurozone breaking up, Schaeuble was quoted as saying: "According to everything that I know at the moment, yes." He insisted that Europe's politicians "are doing everything to prevent the common currency falling apart."

"Of course, the European Union cannot force anyone to stay in if they don't want to belong any more," he added. "But no such development can be seen at the moment."

Germany, Europe's biggest economy, is a key player in the long-running battle to stem the eurozone debt crisis. It has backed the strategy of getting governments to embark on often-savage austerity measures to reduce deficits.

But it has opposed measures such as issuing jointly backed eurobonds and argued that there is no quick fix to the crisis, expressing great skepticism about the wisdom of a major government bond-buying drive by the European Central Bank that is advocated by many as a way of forcing down struggling countries' borrowing costs.

"The talk of bazookas and the like only leads to us not tackling sustainably the causes of the crisis," Schaeuble was quoted as saying.

The eurozone will quickly face new challenges in 2012, with both Italy and Spain needing to borrow large amounts of money early in the new year. Both countries face high borrowing costs.

Schaeuble acknowledged that Europe's refinancing needs in early 2012 are "not trivial."

"But the more we win back confidence on the markets, the more investors ... will invest in the eurozone, and not just in German bonds," he said. "There is no shortage of money worldwide."

"In case of doubt, a somewhat higher interest rate has to be paid for some government bonds," Schaeuble said. "That is not damaging per se and also can encourage the understanding that we have to tackle the actual causes of the crisis: overly high debts and a lack of competitiveness."

Schaeuble said he sees no sign of a credit crunch in Germany. Asked about other countries, he pointed to the ECB's moves to provide massive long-term loans to banks.

"Given the measures the ECB has taken to provide banks with liquidity, it is hard to imagine that banks would not be in a position to provide sufficient loans to business," he said.
