Agriculture is important to both the urban and rural areas of the Willamette Valley and plays a significant role in the economy. Dalton Hobbs will discuss trends for agriculture, along with why we need to continue to support public agricultural development programs within the Oregon Department of Agriculture and their close partnership with organizations such as SEDCOR and other economic development organizations around the state.

Tom Fessler will examine Oregon agricultural diversity and how it makes us special, as well as makes things more difficult. Our distance to markets is a big drawback, but niches in the different markets can bring success.

Fessler knows a great deal about Oregon?s number on agricultural commodity nursery products. His family farm outside of Mt. Angel spans some 2,000 acres. Nursery products make up the primary crop, but the Fessler family also raises grass seed, beans, broccoli and cauliflower. No other agricultural industry in Oregon has had the meteoric growth of the greenhouse and nursery industry now valued at more than three-quarters of a billion dollars.

Bios

Dalton Hobbs has worked for nearly 30 years in a variety of communication, marketing and developmental positions at the Oregon Department of Agriculture. He currently directs the department?s internationally recognized Agricultural Development and Marketing policy area, which provides market access, certification, promotion and market entry programs for Oregon farmers, ranchers, fishermen and food processors.

Tom Fessler is a fourth generation farmer in the Mt. Angel, Woodburn area. Tom grew up working with his parents and grandparents helping on the farm. He knew at a young age he wanted to farm. The nursery operation was started in 1967, so he grew up both farming and growing nursery crops. After finishing high school Tom started in production at the nursery. After many years he started in overall business management with his father. Today he is general manager of the business. Tom is past President of the Oregon Association of Nurseries.

Hughes Europe brings satellite power to German technology giants ...

As Hughes Europe looks to expand its provision of broadband solutions through a network of service provider partnerships, Hanover-based A?mann Technology GmbH makes use of this tailored approach to communications solutions.

Expanding broadband solutions can provide end-user organisations with communications systems which are perfectly tailored to their often demanding and highly-specialised requirements.

Successful growth must combine specialist knowledge of local markets and customer challenges with solutions based on a resilient yet flexible communications platform. In addition, to meeting these goals effectively partner organisations must themselves have similar business objectives and complementary products and skills sets.

Cohesive support

In the case of Hughes Europe and A?mann Technology, now a Premium Partner in Germany, the result of this synergy can create a strong springboard for future growth, through a series of satellite-based communications solutions for an increasing range of vertical markets throughout Europe, Asia and Africa. For some multi-national companies the development of effective solutions for global manufacturers requires a supporting integrated communications infrastructure.

Those larger companies will have recognised the need for full pan-European coverage for their multi-national networks. Establishing a relationship with a specialist provider of satellite communications who can offer communication tools which deliver a resilient ?one-stop shop? coverage solution, can be of great benefit here.

The result is that, value-added resellers (VAR), are able to offer secure, reliable and cost-effective ?new generation? high-speed internet via satellite. This is made possible using high performance dual Ka/Ku band router broadband technology. It provides connectivity to a broad range of customers, from end-users and small to medium-sized businesses to multi-national enterprises and government organisations.

By combining a two-way satellite connection using a very small aperture terminal and customer support, it is possible to provide ubiquitous coverage and high performance. This means that customers can be online anytime and anywhere with broadband access, independent of cable and DSL.

Encrypted solution
This by itself would be valuable enough in driving revenue growth. However, in recent years the IP-based encrypted mobile telephony solution, ATGcall, has been developed and targeted at both commercial, civil and military organisations demanding highly secure communications for the transmission of sensitive data.

This development has provided the opportunity for A?mann Technology and Hughes Europe to broaden their reach, both geographically and in terms of target sectors. Middle Eastern and African governments, for example, have shown significant interest and it is now possible to develop key third-party partnerships with some Middle Eastern companies.

Irrespective of whether an organisation operates in the public or private sectors, much can be gained from the connectivity and wide reach that satellite broadband can provide. These tailored communications will go a long way in helping to connect the global operations of large companies and the sectors in which they can now operate.

Onkyo intros a new pair of TX-NR AV receivers, prices start at $999
Shortly after introducing its entry-level TX-NR515 and TX-NR616 receivers, Onkyo is taking the wraps off of a fresh pair of souped-up, pricier AV boxes. Both part of the TX-NR family, the TX-NR717 ($999) and TX-NR818 ($1,119) are carrying on the 7.2-channel audio tradition seen on their lower-priced siblings, while a Qdeo processor handles all video upscaling duties -- yes, 4K included. The 3D-ready couple is also packing THX Select 2 Plus certification, a whopping eight HDMI ports on each box, DTS-HD Master Audio / Dolby TrueHD decoding and a revamped 1080p GUI. Onkyo's also said iOS and Kindle Fire variants of its Android Remote App are in the works, though mum's the word on when they'll be up for grabs. Either of these good enough for your home setup? They won't hit shelves until May, which may (baller status) or may not (Average Joe) be enough time to save up.

World stock markets jump on Bernanke remarks

BANGKOK (AP) ? World stock markets rose Tuesday after comments by Federal Reserve chief Ben Bernanke suggested he thinks more needs to be done to help spur the U.S. economy.

Benchmark oil hung above $107 per barrel. The dollar dropped against the euro and the yen.

Stocks were higher in early European trade. Britain's FTSE 100 rose 0.5 percent to 5,932.07. Germany's DAX gained 0.9 percent to 7,141.12 and France's CAC-40 rose 0.8 percent to 3,529.64.

Asian stock markets posted solid gains throughout the day, led by Japan's Nikkei 225 index. The benchmark jumped 2.4 percent to close at 10,255.15, its highest finish since a devastating earthquake and tsunami on March 11, 2011.

South Korea's Kospi rose 1 percent to 2,039.76 with heavy industrial shares helping to push the benchmark higher. Hong Kong's Hang Seng climbed 1.8 percent to 21,046.91 and Australia's S&P/ASX 200 added 0.9 percent to 4,301.30.

Bernanke told an audience at the National Association for Business Economics that the U.S. job market was still weak despite recent signs of improvement. That could mean he believes the Fed needs to continue to prop up the economy by keeping short-term interest rates near zero and perhaps by buying more bonds later.

The Fed has embarked on two previous rounds of bond-buying, most recently in late 2010, known as quantitative easing. The idea is to drive down long-term interest rates and encourage investors to buy stocks. The second round ignited a 28 percent Wall Street rally in eight months.

The mere thought that a third round of bond-buying, dubbed QE3 by industry insiders, might be possible was all it took for markets to respond.

"Bernanke said that the Fed has to maintain the regime of loose monetary policy, and the market interpreted this as a chance for QE3," said Francis Lun, managing director of Lyncean Holdings in Hong Kong. "That's why the stock markets rallied," he said, referring to Wall Street. "And that carried over to Asia."

The dollar weakened against most major currencies since traders interpreted Bernanke's comments to mean that interest rates will remain near zero. Lower rates tend to weigh on a currency by reducing the returns investors get from holding it.

That helped support prices for commodities since they are traded in dollars and considered more of a bargain for investors who hold other currencies such as the euro.

Chinese industrial and precious metals shares rose. Hong Kong-listed Jiangxi Copper Co. jumped 3.8 percent. Aluminum Corp. of China soared 4.1 percent.

Hyundai Heavy Industries, South Korea's leading shipbuilder, jumped 3.1 percent and Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction rose 1.9 percent.

Sentiment was also boosted by speculation that Germany would be willing to agree to an increase in Europe's bailout fund to ?700 billion ($930 billion). Germany has to date resisted calls to increase the lending capacity of the fund beyond the planned ?500 billion ? despite uncertainty over the ability of Rome and Madrid to repay their debts.

Benchmark oil for May delivery was up 12 cents to $107.15 in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract up 16 cents to settle at $107.03 per barrel in New York on Monday.

In currency trading, the euro rose to $1.3347 from $1.3343 late Monday in New York. The dollar slipped to 82.79 yen from 82.84 yen.

(AP) ? Mali's U.S.-trained coup leader said Saturday he is in control of the country, has no fears of a countercoup and wants peace talks with the rebels whose northern rebellion was the trigger that led him to oust a democratically elected president.

Capt. Amadou Sanogo, who appeared exhausted, his voice hoarse, stressed the importance of unity for the West African nation in an exclusive interview with The Associated Press at Kati garrison outside Bamako, the capital. What started there Wednesday as a mutiny of low-ranking officers and rank-and-file soldiers turned into a full-blown coup d'etat.

"Tuareg people in the north, Arab people, are our brothers. ... I want all of them to come to the same table right after this interview, my door is open, we should talk about this process," Sanogo said.

Sanogo's ouster Wednesday of President Ahmed Toumani Toure just five weeks before he was to step down after presidential elections threatens the cause of democracy in a region prone to coups and jeopardizes Mali's standing at the heart of the Western-backed fight against Africa's thriving wing of al-Qaida.

The European Union, the World Bank and the African Development Bank all have suspended aid because of the coup, and the African Union has suspended the country's membership. The United States is considering suspending all but humanitarian aid.

"Right now I'm in control of all the country," Sanogo, 39, said confidently.

But rebels seeking to create a separate state in northern Mali for the nomadic Tuareg people have taken advantage of the power vacuum to advance to the gates of the strategic northern town of Kidal. Soldiers are deserting by the dozens while others are retreating without a fight amid disarray in the army command, a senior rebel commander told the AP on Thursday. The rebels are led by battle-hardened colonels who fought in the army of Libyan dictator Moammar Gadhafi before returning home heavily armed.

Mali's land borders and airspace remained closed Saturday, trapping thousands of visitors including three African foreign ministers who were there for a meeting. The country has been under a curfew since the coup.

Sanogo would not say where Toure is, or even if he knows his whereabouts.

"As a soldier, I have my secrets," is all he would say.

Pushed about whether Toure is protected by any soldiers, he said "Not even one."

He was contradicted by one officer who told the AP that a handful of the red-bereted parachutists who made up the presidential guard remain with the toppled leader. The officer spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of reprisals.

The African Union also said Thursday that it has information that Toure is safe, under the protection of Red Berets at a location not far from Bamako.

Sanogo, however, claimed the Red Berets were with him, and at least three soldiers in his office at Kati garrison sported red berets.

The putschists have also arrested at least three Cabinet ministers, but the whereabouts of Defense Minister Gen. Sadio Gassama are unknown.

Sanogo says he acted Wednesday to avert a national security crisis because the government was not providing the arms and ammunition needed to fight the rebels, who have killed scores of soldiers.

On Friday, state radio and TV went dead for about an hour and troops set up barricades around its downtown headquarters, raising speculation that a countercoup was in progress. Rumors coursed that Sanogo was wounded, even dead.

But the television station flickered back to life, and later showed Sanogo in a room of soldiers wearing different uniforms and berets, which the coup leader said indicated they were members of the police, the paramilitary gendarmerie and the Red Berets. It was a show of unity meant to dispel reports of a divided army.

When asked about a countercoup, Sanogo calmly responded: "To be honest, I don't fear."

The Africa Command of the U.S. Defense Department confirmed that Sanogo received basic officer training in the United States as well as participating in several other training programs there.

State TV and radio on Saturday repeated warnings for soldiers to stop the pillaging that began Friday, when soldiers were stealing everything from people's cars to bananas being sold by vendors on street corners.

State TV and radio were also broadcasting a communique urging gas stations to reopen. They had closed because soldiers had been ordering their vehicles refilled without payment.

Saturday morning, major stores and the city's downtown market remain shuttered. People fearful of more trouble rushed around small grocery stores and roadside vendors to stock up on food supplies. Cars returned to the streets as the looting subsided.

Sanogo played down any chaos.

"People are starting with their daily life, the market is open, transportation has been going on now. I believe I am getting closer to what I promised to my people," he said.

But he has offered no clear agenda.

"I'm scared to say it but it must be said: We can never put our confidence in a young soldier with a gun," said Kalifa Keita, 30, who was buying goods from a street vendor in downtown Bamako. "The problem is that these things take time to resolve, and that makes me afraid."

This week's coup represents a major setback for the nation of 15.4 million at the bottom of the Sahara desert. Although Toure initially took power in a 1991 coup, he became known as the "Soldier of Democracy" because he handed power to civilians, and retreated from public life. Years later he re-emerged to win the 2002 election and was re-elected in 2007.

A dozen candidates were running in the April 29 vote, which is now in jeopardy.

6waves Lolapps? CTO and Chief Product Officer Rue And Sethi Step Down

arjun-sethiJust a few days after social gaming company 6waves Lolapps said it was laying off most of its development staff to focus on publishing, its chief product officer Arjun Sethi and chief technology officer Brian Rue have stepped down. 6waves Lolapps was born last July out of a merger between a Facebook game developer Lolapps and a publisher 6waves. The publisher had been instrumental to the success of Lolapps' hit Ravenwood Fair, which was considered one of the best games on the platform in late 2010 and early last year. Clearly, the merger didn't work exactly as intended. But with the deal, 6waves Lolapps picked up some valuable technology that helped boost revenue per day from players across the publisher's network of titles. Sethi said his resignation after more than four years at the company was planned ahead of the layoffs.

3 Benefits of Redesigning Your Business Website

March 23rd, 2012 | Anchor Wave

The benefits of overhauling your business website are more than just cosmetic. Making changes to your site?s design, structure, and copywriting can help to improve your bottom line. Below, we?ll review some of the main benefits of working with your trusted internet marketing firm on a website redesign.

1. Increased Conversion Rates

The purpose of a business website is to encourage visitors to take an action, such as calling you, sharing their information, or making a purchase. Many business websites unintentionally bury the most important information, like a contact channel or call-to-action, in hard-to-find places. An expert web design firm can ensure that it is as simple as possible for visitors to find important information and take a desired action. This can improve your lead generation, foot traffic, and sales!

2. Better Branding

Poorly designed websites don?t just drive away potential customers; they also make your business look unprofessional. Just as you would take care to design a logo that matches your company?s personality, you should take steps to coordinate your website design with other branding and marketing initiatives. Coherent design across your website, logo, and signage conveys professionalism and attention to detail.

3. Improved SEO

Search engine optimization (SEO) is a web design strategy to help your business show up in results on Google and other search engines. Working with a web design firm, your business can come up with a list of keywords that relate back your services and location?for example ?Cosmetic Dentistry in Tucson.? A successful website design will incorporate keywords in the copywriting and site structure. This kind of site design helps to capture more customers searching for your business online, and drives those customers to your site.

Are you considering a website redesign for your business? Talk to the Tucson web design and internet marketing experts at Anchor Wave. We can answer your questions and help your business improve its online presence. Visit us online, or call (520) 622-3731.

Like most Las Vegas wedding venues, Bellagio offers the services of a wedding coordinator and a choice of wedding packages.

Packages range in price depending on the number of amenities a couple chooses and the amount of chapel time reserved. Prices for a Bellagio wedding start at approximately $1,500 and ascend steeply from there.

Bellagio features two wedding chapels and an anteroom where guests gather before the ceremony.

The chapel can be decorated according to the couple's specifications. Above is the South Chapel, which can accommodate up to 130 guests. The smaller East Chapel holds up to 30 guests.

My wife might be gay - Talk About Marriage

Please help...

I'm in the middle of what might be the end of my marriage. I've been with my wife for nearly 10 years. We've been married for 3 and a half years and we have 2 kids under 4 together.

After sensing something was wrong for some time I finally worked up the courage to ask my wife if there was anything that had gone wrong, a reason why she was pushing me away.

She told me that she has feelings for a girl that she works with and that she wasn't sure if she wanted to pursue it.

I was in complete shock when she told me. I had no idea that she was interested in girls. She told me that she wasn't sure if she was gay, but couldn't deny her feelings. She had felt something for another girl before we met but those feelings faded so she thought that perhaps she was straight afterall.

She didn't want to throw our marriage away, especially if the feelings she had were just a passing phase like before. The girl she has feelings for is also her best friend and by opening up about how she feels she was afraid she was going to lose her as a friend too.

As you might imagine I'm pretty gutted by the whole revelation. The possibility of losing my family over something I seem to have no control over is tearing me up inside.

The question asked of me was - can I live in a relationship where my partner had openly confessed to wanting to be with someone else? Live with the possibility that should their friendship evolve into something more I would lose my wife.

After spending the day thinking it over I came to the conclusion that I was prepared to work on our relationship, but only if my wife confronted her feelings for her friend and decided that she wanted to stay in this marriage. And if that was to happen she needed to cut her ties with this girl. I never wanted to be the type of husband that says "It's her or me" but I can't see how our marriage can survive with this other person in our life.

My wife insisted that she couldn't decide on what she wants to do without first telling her friend how she felt. She said that it didn't mean that she would leave if the feelings were mutual, just that she would need to consider who she wants to be with. And further to that, even if nothing came of her confession, she did not want to give up her best friend.

I asked her to go to her friend straight away and confront her feelings. I just couldn't live with this hanging over us any longer. So she did and her friend didn't feel the same way.

My wife now says that she wants to work on our relationship, and she will do anything to make things right. But she doesn't want to stop spending time with her friend. She insists that I'm not her "second prize" and that she still loves me but I can't help but feel like I am. It hurts me deeply that she would feel this way for someone else. I feel like I deserve to be with someone who isn't confused about who she loves.

The only other option I have is to walk away. As much as that might be the best thing to do I just can't comtemplate leaving my family. They are everything to me and without them I literary have nothing...

So I just want to know if I'm just being stupid to think that a relationship can outlast this kind of problem. If I had to leave my family I will have nowhere to go. I moved intestate to be with her and the only family we have here is hers. I have no support network, not enough money to rent a new place to stay and the only place I can go to get those things takes me too far away from my kids.

And I would like to know if anyone else thinks it's unreasonable for her to insist on still spending time with her friend? I'm not ok with it. I feel for my wife because I know she finds it hard to make friends but I can't accept it. Risking her family for a friendship says a lot to me about what value she places on those relationships.

I have no one talk to about this. I love my wife very much and as much as she has hurt me it wouldn't be fair for me to "out" her confusion about her sexuality to anyone else.

I'm so confused right now. I just want to know if we can be happy again.

Personal Finance: Tax Refunds to be Spent En Masse this Year ...

According to Capital One Bank, most Americans who receive a tax refund will promptly spend it in some form or fashion this year. The average refund, which has been estimated at $2,913, will go in many cases to ?everyday expenses? (28 percent), while another 28 percent of those surveyed plan to make a major purchase like electronics, a vacation, or new clothing and accessories[1]. A little less than a third of those surveyed reported a plan to save ?at least part of the money,? however, while 17 percent anticipated paying down a debt and five percent intended to invest the funds.

Interestingly, 69 percent of all Americans do not calculate their tax refund or tax payment into their annual budget, the survey showed. And those who owe taxes do not appear to be planning ahead much either. Only 25 percent have money set aside specifically for taxes, while 19 percent will work out a payment plan with the IRS. 32 percent will pay up front, but will have to dip into personal savings to do so. [2]?Tax season is a good opportunity for people to plan ahead,? one financial planner pointed out, adding that tax refunds represent ?a good opportunity for people to plan ahead with an eye toward their future goals and financial health.? This is the second year in a row that this survey has indicated that a third or more of Americans plan to spend part or all of their refund.

How do you handle tax season? Does this survey reflect your tax habits?

Phillip Phillips moves up on 'American Idol'

(AP Photo/Fox, Michael Becker)

(AP) ? Phillip Phillips didn't follow any of the advice from his "American Idol" mentors ? and the judges loved him for it.

The 21-year-old pawn shop worker from Leesburg, Ga., defiantly wore gray after style adviser Tommy Hilfiger deemed it too drab. He shrugged off musical mentor Diddy's mandate to dance.

And he turned out a growling "Movin' Out" during an evening of Billy Joel tunes on the Fox talent contest Wednesday that Randy Jackson called "one of the best renditions of that song ever."

"You took that song and you Phillip Phillips-ed that," beamed Steven Tyler.

Other singers who impressed the panel included 16-year-old San Diego student Jessica Sanchez with a touching rendition of "Everybody Has a Dream"; 28-year-old teacher Elise Testone, of Charleston, S.C., with a soaring take on "Vienna"; and 20-year-old alt-rocker Colton Dixon of Murfreesboro, Tenn., with a classic version of "Piano Man."

"You sing with pure feeling," Jennifer Lopez told him. "I had goosies from head to toe the moment you started."

Deandre Brackensick of San Jose, Calif., opened the show with "Only the Good Die Young," but it was 26-year-old disc jockey Erika Van Pelt of South Kingstown, R.I., who nabbed everyone's attention by debuting a shorter and darker hairstyle during her performance of "New York State of Mind." Lopez said Van Pelt's new 'do gave had "a Pat Benatar vibe."

Lopez wasn't feeling the delivery of "She's Got a Way" from soulful 19-year-old singer Joshua Ledet, of Westlake, La., though. She told the gospel singer that he needed to be "connected more to the lyrics."

She was more pleased with the twangy take on "Shameless" from 18-year-old country rocker Skylar Laine of Brandon, Miss. "You're not shameless," said Lopez. "You're fearless."

The panel later targeted the pitch problems that 18-year-old singer Hollie Cavanaugh of McKinney, Texas, experienced on "Honesty." They were also in agreement that the over-the-top version of "My Life" from 22-year-old nonprofit organizer Heejun Han, of New York, was entertaining but outlandish. Jackson called it a "good time" but admitted the vocals were "missing a bit."

"At some point, you've got to take it more serious," Tyler sternly warned the goofy Han.

One of the top 10 finalists will face elimination Thursday.

Good Reference and Education: How To Increase Your Market Value?

With the economy and the difficulties that many people are having with finding the work that they need, it?s often necessary to give yourself all of the advantages that you possibly can. This often includes getting an education or perhaps continuing your education to make yourself attractive to employers. What are some of the specific things that may be necessary in this regard?

As far as increasing your education, it really depends upon the type of work that you are doing as to what type of education you will need. As an example, for any type of IT security certification or perhaps to become a Microsoft Office specialist, you are going to need to take classes and then the appropriate testing. Using CompTIA, which is the computing technology industry association, you can get the certifications that are necessary and in most cases, you will be able to take those classes and tests online.

Or other type of education, taking some online courses is also going to be of benefit. Those courses can differ from each other, however, depending upon the specific type of employment that you desire. As an example, those within the nursing field may be able to get their degree online entirely but in other fields, it may be necessary for you to mix the online taxes with taking some courses in your local area. You can contact the college directly to ask any questions that you may have about getting the education that you need and then follow through to find the employment that you want.

The Family and Pets

The scene I am about to describe has probably happened to every family at least once, or has at least happened to individuals in a family you are acquainted with. It is a simple scenario but it is something that can result in tough consequences if care is not exercised in the event that it does happen.

Let?s set the stage. Mommy is in the kitchen one day, when suddenly, out of nowhere the kids happily come in from out of doors. Mommy decides to find out what all the commotion is about, and as soon as the kids see her they eagerly utter an extremely overused line, ?Mommy, can we keep him! Can we keep him!? And there in their arms is a bundle of fur that?s usually either a cat or a dog but can just as easily be anything from a farm animal to a domesticated rat.

And then the family has to make one of the biggest decisions it ever has to make, and it is usually an issue beg enough to justify the convening of the family court. Should they adopt the pet or not?

  • A pet will demand a lot of responsibility. Someone has to feed it, give it water, house break it, and train it. Someone also has to take care of it when it is sick. This all takes a lot of time and dedication to perform.
  • The pet will cut a chunk of the family budget. The feed will need to be fed and taken to the vet in case of problems, and all these will need to be payed for.
  • The pet can pose some sort of nuisance. It may shed its fur all around the house. It may break fragile objects in the house if not properly trained.
  • The pet will demand attention, and divide everyone?s attention in the process. This can get in the way of work or study or family activities.
  • The pet can be used to teach children about care and responsibility. Putting the responsibility of caring for a pet in a child?s hands is one of the best ways to help them build the kind of dedication they will be able to use in the future, as parents and in the workplace.
  • Different pets bring different benefits to the table. Dogs can act as guards and help to keep a household safe. Cats are great for getting rid of pests. Guinea pigs are adorable and provide a lot of comfort.
  • A pet becomes another part of the family, and is able to bring joy to everyone. A well taken care of pet also returns the care you give it in various ways, helping to keep the family happy.

Before any family adopts a pet, everyone should make sure that they understand the pros and cons and that the responsibility of taking care of the cat has been properly allocated. Remember that a pet will likely stay in the family for quite some time and will become an integral part of the family. A pet, therefore, demands love and a family should be able to give it.

(AP) ? Students began trickling in early. Some dressed up in button-down shirts. Nervous chatter and fidgeting arose around the room.

And then in walked Professor Ben Bernanke, also known as the chairman of the Federal Reserve.

The 30 undergraduates at George Washington University sent up a round of applause. It was, they'd been told beforehand, "appropriate, even encouraged, to politely applaud" Tuesday's guest lecturer.

Few needed prompting. They were about to hear from perhaps the world's best-qualified person to lecture their class, titled "Reflections on the Federal Reserve and Its Place in Today's Economy."

"We have a chance to speak one-on-one with a guy who's arguably one of the most important people in the world," said Sameer Iqbal, a junior finance major from Potomac, Md.

"He's taking time out of his schedule to speak to 30 college kids? I think that's awesome."

Also, unusual. In giving the first of his four scheduled lectures to the GW class, Bernanke became the first sitting Fed chairman ever to help teach a college course.

Reporters and news photographers nearly matched the number of students. Bags were searched. And security personnel stood guard.

Michael Feinberg, a senior finance major, said he normally doesn't get to class a half-hour early. But "normally I don't have my bag sniffed by a bomb-sniffing dog."

Wade Harris, a junior finance major from Melbourne, Fla., made sure to wear a tie under his sweater.

"Opportunities like this are one of the main reasons why people come to GW," he said. "Regardless of what your major is, it's relevant to the world we live in."

Tuesday's lecture focused on U.S. central banking dating to the panics of the 19th century and early 20th century, which led to the Fed's creation in 1913. The second lecture, on Thursday, will involve the central bank's actions after World War II.

In the final two, on March 27 and 29, Bernanke will review the roots of the 2008 financial crisis and the Fed's response to the crisis and the recession that followed.

Anyone can view Bernanke's lectures live (at www.ustream.tv/channel/federalreserve). The Fed will maintain the four one-hour lectures on its site for later viewing.

The number of people viewing Tuesday's lecture at the Fed's website held steady at about 3,300 throughout Bernanke's class.

The students seemed most engaged when the Fed chairman tried to convey macroeconomic concepts in real-world terms. He drew some laughs in describing the pitfalls of a gold standard for a nation's currency.

It is costly, Bernanke noted dryly, to dig gold up in "South Africa or somewhere" and "put back into another hole."

The lectures give the Fed chairman a chance to reprise the role of professor he played for more than two decades, first at Stanford and then at Princeton, where he eventually chaired the economics department.

He clearly enjoys that role. On Tuesday, Bernanke wasn't scheduled to field questions. Yet he stayed to do so, and he called on students by their first names, reading from the names plates in front of them.

Mostly, students listen intently to the lecture, which Bernanke delivered with the aid of a 50-slide PowerPoint presentation. The Fed chairman provided a tour through the history of central banking, beginning with the first central banks in Sweden, established in 1688.

Bernanke also reviewed the causes and the Fed's response to the Great Depression of the 1930s. During his years as a college professor, Bernanke was considered one of the country's leading experts on the Depression.

Some students acknowledged after class that they were a bit intimidated at first. But Bernanke put them at ease, they said, and they recognized the value of his insights.

"It's like taking basketball practice from Michael Jordan," said Dan Wright, a sophomore political science major from Cincinnati.

Bernanke's staff had approached GW late last year about the possibility of allowing Bernanke to give some lectures. The university and the Federal Reserve are within blocks of each other in the Foggy Bottom neighborhood of Washington.

GW assembled the class from 80 applicants who wrote essays on what they hoped to learn.

The GW lectures allow Bernanke a way to expand his mission of demystifying the Fed. As part of that campaign, Bernanke became the first Fed chief to hold regular news conferences and conduct town-hall meetings. The Fed this month also launched a Twitter channel ? (at)federalreserve.

Tim Fort, a business professor who specializes in ethics, developed the GW course in consultation with Bernanke's staff. Beyond Bernanke's lectures, Fort has enlisted about a dozen GW faculty members to help teach the class.
