Ordnance Survey Blog ? Tour the world on a British staycation

If you?re tightening your belt this summer and planning a staycation, you might be surprised to know you can tour the world without leaving Great Britain.

We?ve been taking a look at exotic place names in our gazetteer and there are a huge array scattered across the country.? From Moscow (Cumbria) to Bermuda (Warwickshire) to Egypt (Hampshire) ? there are a huge range of worldwide destinations you could visit.

You could even theme your tour ? why not start with Europe? There?s Barcelona in Cornwall to the South and you could travel along the coast to Kent to visit Dunkirk and Gibraltar. If you started to head gradually northwards, you could stop off in Holland (Surrey) and carry on to The Hague in Tameside. Turning South at Florence (near Stoke-on-Trent) you could finish off at Geneva in Wales.

If you dream of crossing the Atlantic, then Canada in Lincolnshire might draw you in ? or you could try Toronto or Quebec (both in County Durham). The United Stated are just as well represented with Baltimore, Dallas, Houston and California all ready for a visit in Scotland.

We?ve come across lots more too? ? and you can hunt for more on our OS getamap service, see if you can locate New Zealand for example. As well as being able to look up locations, you can plot and print out routes to follow and it will even display popular points of interest in the local area for you to explore too. Try it out for yourself: http://www.getamap.ordnancesurveyleisure.co.uk/?and let us know your favourite exotic place names on the blog.
