ACLI Strongly Supports Life Insurance ... - Life Insurance Health

The loss of a family member can be devastating, both emotionally and financially. Although nothing can ease the emotional impact, life insurance can help ease the financial impact after tragedy strikes.

That is the message that millions of industry professionals will be delivering to families in communities across the country during Life Insurance Awareness Month (LIAM) this September. This annual event is sponsored by LIFE, the Life and Health Foundation for Education, and strongly supported by the American Council of Life Insurers (ACLI).

?Life insurance provides the peace of mind that comes with knowing that if tragedy strikes, family members will have the financial resources they need to ensure their lives and dreams stay on track,? said ACLI President and CEO Dirk Kempthorne in a September 7 letter to members of Congress about LIAM.

But the value of life insurance goes beyond financial protection in these unsettled economic times. Life insurance can build savings that grow as part of the financial protection it provides. These are savings that a family can use to see themselves through financial difficulties or help fund a comfortable retirement. In fact, life insurance and annuity products represent 20 percent of Americans? long-term savings.

Moreover, life insurance companies contribute positively to the nation?s economy. As the single largest source of bond financing for American businesses, life insurers are a major driver of the nation?s economic engine.

?Life insurance is a significant source of financial security to families,? said Kempthorne in his letter to Congress. ?Sometimes overlooked is the fact that life insurance companies are a significant source of long-term investments in communities across the nation. These investments spur business development and most importantly in this climate?jobs.?

During the month of September, ACLI will feature the Life Insurance Awareness Month logo on its website, www.acli.com, with links to information and personal stories that illustrate the crucial difference life insurance has made in the lives of American families. ACLI also will run ads on the importance of life insurance in The Hill, Roll Call, Politico and the Washington Post Express throughout the month.

Greece passes new property tax, PM meets in ... - no fax cash advance

The leaders of Germany and Greece met in Berlin on Tuesday, buoying stock markets around the world with hopes they were finally preparing a comprehensive solution to the European debt crisis.

Greece must receive an euro8 billion ($11 billion) rescue loan before mid-October to stave off bankruptcy, a collapse that would send shock waves through financial markets in Europe and the world. But creditors have demanded more efforts to raise revenue.

In response, Greek lawmakers approved a controversial new property tax Tuesday evening, passing it 154 votes to 143 against in the 300-member parliament.

Chancellor Angela Merkel?s government downplayed speculation of bold new moves ahead of her meeting Tuesday with Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou but the simple gathering itself buoyed spirits in financial markets.

The current plan is to have Greece implement painful debt-reduction measures in exchange for rescue loans. Greece relies on funds from last year?s euro110 billion ($149 billion) package, and European leaders have also agreed on a second euro109 billion bailout, although some details of that remain to be worked out.

Greek Finance Minister Evangelos Venizelos said his country will get the money. ?The disbursement will be decided in time, in line with the course of our funding needs,? he said Tuesday.

Speaking over chants from protesting ministry employees and tax office workers outside his department, Venizelos said Greek had made great efforts to achieve its fiscal targets, but that a ?hyper-effort? was necessary to fully meet its commitments.

Experts, however, say the current course of austerity is untenable.

There is growing speculation in the markets that Greece?s bailout creditors will look to impose bigger losses on Greece?s private bondholders as well as recapitalizing Europe?s banks and boosting the size of the eurozone?s rescue fund. Talk of such a comprehensive package has helped turn sentiment around in stock markets this week following last week?s turmoil.

So far, there?s been no confirmation from Europe?s capitals that such a comprehensive solution is being planned Payday Loan for Bad Credit.

Venizelos said representatives from the International Monetary Fund, European Commission and European Central Bank will return to Athens this week. The so-called troika suspended their review in early September amid talk of missed targets and budget shortfalls.

In Berlin, Papandreou told a conference of the Federation of German Industries that ?we are borrowing to repay? _ but also stressed that Europe needs to show it can get its act together.

?I can guarantee that Greece will live up to all its commitments,? Papandreou said ahead of the evening meeting with Merkel.

The Greek government recently announced new austerity measures, including pension cuts and tax hikes.

The new property tax will be charged through electricity bills to make it easier for the state to collect, instead of going through Greece?s unwieldy and inefficient tax system. Those who refuse to pay risk having their power cut off.

But the extra charge has deeply angered Greeks, who have already been through more than a year of sharp austerity that has seen salary and pension cuts and increased taxes across the board. State electricity company unionists have threatened not to collect the tax.

Speaking before the vote, Venizelos acknowledged the new tax was harsh on some, but stressed the government had no choice but to impose it as it fought to reduce its budget deficit.

?Clearly there will be categories of people who will not be able to pay this housing charge and this is a situation that will be resolved,? he said. ?But the most important thing is that we achieve the targets agreed to in 2011 and 2012.?

Greeks have been outraged by the new measures after a year of austerity, and unions have responded with strikes and protests. Public transport workers walked off the job Tuesday for two days, and were to be joined by taxi drivers on Wednesday. Tax office and customs workers were also on strike.

Gateway NV55S05u

The arduous part about spotting a bargain desktop replacement laptop is figuring out whether its parts are worth your while. The Gateway NV55S05u ($579.99 list), a budget 15-inch laptop, gets first crack at AMD's newest Fusion APUs (codenamed "Llano"). Though it can't outperform a similar offering from Intel, this laptop can tackle almost any task thrown at it, lasted almost five hours in our battery tests, and is priced to move. Budget-conscious shoppers: This laptop should be on your radar.

Design
Although the laptop's shiny plastic enclosure is a three-year old design, it's bright white hue and flowery decorations is pleasing enough to offset the inexpensive materials. But it's no match for the luxury of the aluminum covers found in the Lenovo IdeaPad V570-1066A9U ($629.99 list, 4 stars) and Asus U56E-BBL5 ($649.99 list, 4 stars). For a desktop replacement, the NV55S05u isn't overly bulky; its 5.6-pound frame is in the same ball park as the 5.5-pound Asus U56E-BBL5 and 5.6-pound HP Pavilion dv6-6013cl ($649.99 list, 4.5 stars). If you need a lighter 15-inch system, the 5.2-pound Samsung RV520-W01 can provide that.

The 15.6-inch screen doesn't really stand out, as its brightness levels and baseline 1,366 by 768 resolution are consistent with its peers. For the ultimate screen experience, you'll have to pay a significant premium for the Dell XPS 15z ($999 direct, 4 stars), whose resolution can scale to 1,920 by 1,080. The typing experience is usually a toss-up in this price range, but Gateway didn't disappoint here. The chiclet-style keys are raised to an ideal height so that it doesn't feel like your fingers are pounding on a hard surface. The Lenovo V570-1066A9U, however, is a better keyboard with curvier keys that takes into account the shape of your fingers. Gateway added a full size numeric keypad, unlike the half-size one found in the Lenovo V570-1066A9U. The mouse buttons aren't quite as soft as those of the Lenovo V570-1066A9U and Asus U56E-BBL5, but the NV55S05u's overall navigating experience lived up to expectations.

Features
The feature set is as standard as it gets in this price range. It has three USB 2.0 ports, and no eSATA or USB 3.0 technology, which have faster transfer speeds than USB 2.0. A USB 3.0 port can be found on the Asus U56E-BBL5. The NV55S05u lacks the latest wireless technologies, such as WiMAX and Wireless Display 2 (WiDi 2.0), which can be found in the Lenovo V570-1066A9U and U56E-BBL5 (although you do get Wi-Fi and Ethernet for network connectivity). Like every other desktop replacement, the NV55S05u has HDMI and VGA video outputs, a webcam, and a multimedia card reader. Although its 640GB, 5,400rpm hard drive matches that of the Samsung RV520-W01 and Asus U56E-BBL5, it's impressive that Gateway included this much in a cheaper laptop.

Performance
Gateway NV55S05Llano-based Fusion APUs are AMD's most powerful processors yet, buoyed by excellent graphics (with the on-die Radeon HD 6620G) and low-power consumption (think good battery life). This particular chip has four physical processor cores, compared with the Intel Core i5's two. It sounds impressive from a marketing perspective, but its performance scores are more in line with a dual-core Intel Core i3 processor. For instance, the NV55S05u trailed the Core i5-equipped Lenovo V570-1066A9U (2:00, 2.6) and Asus U56E-BBL5 (1:55, 2.6) in processor-intensive tasks like Handbrake (3 minutes 33 seconds) and Cinebench R11.5 (1.88). It took two minutes than the other two to finish Photoshop CS5 scripts (7:48), a multithreaded test that should have capitalized from the laptop's 6GB of memory and multicore processing. In real world speak, you won't notice these differences unless you're editing huge video files or rendering 50 photos at a time.

In terms of gaming, the A8-3500 in the NV5505u has considerable advantage over a Core i5-equipped laptop. It scored 6,038 in 3DMark 06, which is 30% better than the Lenovo V570-1066A9U (4,414) and Asus U56E-BBL5 (4,840) . The NV55S05u also tallied the highest frame rates in Crysis (36.7 fps) and Lost Planet 2 (38 fps)?two very demanding 3D games. With any integrated graphics chipset, though, you'll get better results by dialing down the settings to medium quality.

In the past, AMD-equipped laptops would always suffer miserably in battery tests compared with Intel-equipped laptops, but the story changes with the new AMD Llano APUs. The NV55S054u scored 4 hours 54 minutes in our battery test, outlasting the Lenovo V570-1066A9U (4:41) and coming within striking distance of the HP dv6-6013cl (5:17). With a bigger battery, the Asus U56E-BBL5 was the clear winner with a score of 7:34. Still, this kind of battery life is unprecedented for AMD components.

The Gateway NV5505Su is the type of desktop replacement that'll make you pause and wonder about the shortcomings that come with a low price and unfamiliar AMD parts. Well, let me reassure you that AMD's new Llano APU, the A8-3500, is every bit as capable as an Intel Core i5. Its graphics environment is superior over Intel's, and battery life, AMD's biggest concern, was more than satisfactory. It may not perform as well in hardcore tasks like video and photo editing, but its low price reflects these shortcomings. I would still recommend the Asus U56E-BBL5 because its slight premium is accompanied by a better looking design, more power, and better battery life.

What is honestly the worst wrestling match you've ever seen ...

Question by EMW: What is honestly the worst wrestling match you?ve ever seen?
This includes WWE, ECW, WCW, TNA. Backyard wrestling doesn?t count, and neither do random squash/comedy matches.

**For me personally, it?s William Regal vs Raven from 2001 InVasion. For some reason, it looks like Raven wrestled Regal?s technical style, and Regal wrestled Raven?s brawling style, and it was a very ugly clash that made for a bad match.

Early Mango users can upgrade directly to RTM build, won't have to roll back to NoDo

Over the weekend, the folks over at Windows Phone New Zealand discovered the "Mango Friends and Family Bundle: Pre-Cleanup" -- the first in a series of two refreshes that promise to clear away any beta updates ahead of Mango's long-awaited rollout. At the time, it seemed like this tool would allow developers to upgrade to the RTM build of the OS, without rolling back to NoDo and losing all of their text messages or app data. Now, Redmond's own Brandon Watson has confirmed via Twitter that this is indeed the case, adding that the update (available in Zune) only offers support to devs who used the Windows Phone beta program. Still, that's pretty reassuring news for all those who jumped on the Mango train a little bit early.

Frontier Post :: Business :: Philippine Airlines outsourcing plan

Posted on September 26, 2011

MANILA (Agencies): An employees? union says it will fight a plan by Philippine Airlines to outsource thousands of jobs in catering, ground handling and telephone reservations. Union leader Gerry Rivera said Sunday only a small number of workers have accepted separation packages offered by the airline. PAL President Jaime Bautista announced last month that about 2,600 employees will be laid off by Sept. 30 but could seek employment with companies contracted to take over the airline services. PAL says it will proceed with the outsourcing plan and will temporarily reduce domestic and international flights during the transition. The layoffs will cut PAL?s staff to 5,000 and are part of a survival plan launched in 2010 after it lost $312 million in the previous two years.

Prostate Cancer ? Have We Cracked The Code? | Online News ...

cancer cellsIn a medical breakthrough that is shocking the world, news comes from the Royal Marsden Hospital in London that a powerful drug has proven itself so successful in treating prostate cancer that trials which normally take years have been stopped and the treatment will be available for men around the world.

News has spread like wildfire about the treatment as it is less harmful than other radiation treatments such as those that damage the patient.? This latest treatment consists of alpha particles that really give the cancer cells a beating.? Literally almost a one-two punch when the cancerous cells are hit with the alpha particles unlike the beta particle radiation that takes thousands of hits.? Dr. Chris Parker who led the research laid out what the treatment does. The data states that the treated patients had a death rate of 30% lower than the other group not taking the treatment and the patients survived much longer.? It?s going to become part of the arsenal of tools for treating prostate cancer for sure.

This goes to show that advances in the fight against cancer are still raging on.? Recently it was discovered that certain viruses were the source of such cancers as breast cancer.? This also coincides with discoveries that certain viruses can be used to eradicate certain cancers.? This takes treatments and cures into a whole new range of science and the breakthroughs all come in within the past few days.

On top of that, researchers also discovered that in America, the average household mouse carries a virus that scientists have concluded leads to breast cancer.? The data was alarming to say the least and suggests that the furry rodents are once more responsible for a plague that has taken numerous lives over the years.? It would also explain why American women suffered such high rates of the disease.

The scientists have their work cut out for them in regards to how to handle the next wave of cancer treatments.? If it turns out that virus against virus is solid form of combat then so be it.? It could turn out that in the not too distant future a cure or treatment for all forms of cancer might just be as easy as one taking one?s daily vitamins.

It?s certain that other researchers will follow through in labs around the world.? New applications of the technology today will be applied and there?s no telling who will deliver the next series of breakthroughs.? Much like the adult stem cell industry that is making major strides breaking down the walls of old medicine and showing that there are alternatives to traditional treatments that are safer and cheaper.

These medical breakthroughs in cancer over the past week have the public?s heads spinning but they?re spinning in the right direction.

Commodities rise on hope for Europe debt deal (AP)

Commodity prices rose across the board Tuesday on hopes that European leaders were preparing a plan to contain the region's debt crisis.

Greece's finance minister said that the country would receive the next round of money in time to avoid a default. German Chancellor Angela Merkel said her country will do whatever it can to help Greece regain investor confidence.

It remains to be seen how such a plan would be structured and whether it will be finalized. However the mere hint of progress on resolving the crisis was enough to encourage investors who have been worried that the crisis would hurt demand for commodities by slowing the global economy.

Gold, silver, copper and oil led commodities higher. Gasoline, natural gas, soybeans and wheat also rose. Prices for many of those contracts have fallen in the past month.

"Given the size of the sell-off that we had over the last few days, a bounce like today's is understandable," MF Global senior market strategist Phillip Streible said.

Commodities also benefited from a weaker dollar. Since commodities are priced in dollars, a weaker dollar makes them cheaper for investors who use other currencies.

Gold for December delivery rose $57.70, or 3.6 percent, to end at $1,652.50 an ounce.

Streible said he believes many investors bought gold as a protection against currency movements and because the price has fallen 9.7 percent this month. It is still up 16 percent for the year.

Energy and agriculture products also finished higher.

Benchmark oil rose $4.21, or 5.2 percent, to end at $84.45 per barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Heating oil rose 8.27 cents to end at $2.8857 per gallon, gasoline futures rose 10.76 cents to $2.636 per gallon and natural gas rose 3 cents to $3.875 per 1,000 cubic feet.

September wheat rose 10 cents to finish at $6.5825 per bushel, December corn rose 4.25 cents to $6.5225 per bushel and November soybeans rose 3.25 cents to $12.63 per bushel.

Senior Citizens Likely to Work Post-Retirement | Nursing Home News

Americans are working into their senior years more than ever in the 21st century. About half of workers plan to keep at least a part-time job after they retire, and nearly a third say they will be retiring after the age of 70 or will never retire.

?I don?t know how many people, unless they are extremely affluent, can afford to retire at 55, or even 65,? says Eileen Felske, 57, who cares for her elderly father. ?Given the economy today, unless you were in a profession making a quarter of a million dollars a year, not too many can say ?I?m confident enough to stop working.? It?s not an age issue; it?s just what we are living through.?

Older Americans are needing to work later in their lives to support themselves. Since there?s been no cost of living increase in Social Security, the state of the economy has made what used to be enough to retire on no longer sufficient. People are also living longer in modern times, and with longer lives come more years of expenses?specifically more medical costs. However, aside from financial need, some middle-aged and senior citizens continue working for personal reasons.

Germaine Alhes, 76, has worked in the same hospital since she was 18 years old, and says she no longer has a monetary reason to continue employment.

?I enjoy the work,? she said. ?It?s hard to imagine people who go to work and don?t like what they?re doing. The people (at the hospital) are like my second family [...] I enjoy the patient care and am thankful I can still do it. When you think about retiring, you get kind of teary eyed. [...] It?s been your whole life.?

UCD junior Sarah Sumpter runs at the Hornet Jamboree last month, the second straight meet where she led the team to first place. Sumpter has amazingly returned to form after missing last season with brain cancer. Wayne Tilcock/Enterprise file photo

Sarah Sumpter?s story, by all standards, is a great one.

A year ago this month, Sumpter, one of UC Davis? top cross country runners, was diagnosed with brain cancer. Now, one year later, she has effectively beaten the illness.

The cancer has gone into what doctors call a stasis period, and she?s able to run full-time for the Aggies again. And the story she?d much rather discuss is that of her team?s quest for a Big West Conference title this season.

?We?ve been planning to do that for years and it?s finally time to bring it home,? said Sumpter, who had to take last year off from running. ?I think we?ve got it this year.?

In fact, two years removed from winning the conference?s 2009 ?individual championship, the humble Sumpter?would rather talk about how well the group of Aggie women around her has come together than the incredible recovery she has made.

?Everybody has kind of found their place and who they work best with,? Sumpter said. ?They?re all definitely very fit. We?re all closer in fitness to each other than we?ve been before, which is huge. Everybody?s really motivated this season, more than I?ve ever seen.

?We all need to work on starting races as a team. It?s hard when you?ve got a huge group of girls and then you have to really get out quick. Tactically, it depends on where you?re placed and you have to figure out what?s your best maneuver to get out of a pack as quick as possible.?

Now a junior, Sumpter had 80 percent of a large tumor removed from her brain only a short time after discovering that she had developed the cancer during a routine checkup. Sitting out from the sport?she loves for her entire sophomore season, Sumpter spent her time watching her UCD women?s teammates, and ?her guys,? as she likes to call the Aggie men?s cross country team, which t0ok first in the Big West in 2010.

Despite her remarkable story, Sumpter will tell you it is her team that deserves the attention for the way it has run in the early part of this season, most recently?coming in second to powerhouse Stanford at the Stanford Invitational last weekend.

UCD won?s first race ? the Aggie Open ? where Sumpter and teammate Krista Drechsler tied for first place, finishing the race in 13:54 to help the Aggies take down Sacramento State.

Next, at the Hornet Jamboree, Sumpter again led the way. She took third and UCD posted another team victory.

Sumpter finished 12th at Stanford.

But her success has not come overnight. It was in high school in Colverdale, where Sumpter first developed her love for the sport, and her tremendous ability.

?Almost every course that I ran I broke some kind of record,? Sumpter explained. ?I broke the meet record for the Division-IV state race, I won that race. I broke a record at every course in my county.

?Everybody likes to feel fast and it gave me kind of a cathartic experience. It was a time after school where I could just forget about everything and kind of go out and be a little solitary. But at the same time you?re getting exercise and you?re enjoying your surroundings.?

Perhaps Sumpter has used that same mentality ? separating running from the rest of her life ? to focus and stay strong in the face of her recent adversity. But you won?t hear about that from her.

She rather talk about her team and how they?re doing instead.

Qualified Lead Generation: 4 Steps to Qualifying Your B2B ...

By leads, September 25, 2011

You know what qualified sales leads are, but if you asked your sales account managers and corporate executives, would they have the same definition of a qualified lead? Probably not.

If qualified lead generation in a business-to-business marketing-for-leads program is to succeed, marketing, sales and corporate management must share a unified definition of qualified sales leads. If you all agree from the start on what a qualified lead is, the marketing team stands a better chance of generating leads that will be valuable to its sales managers and associates.

It?s important to confirm the qualified-leads definition, in writing, with all parties. This definition is different for each company, so you must do some work to define the meaning of qualified sales leads at your company.

Step 1: Know the characteristics of a qualified sales lead

General questions that need to be answered in order to determine if a lead is qualified include the following:

Does the prospect have a need or an application for your product or service?
What is the prospect?s role in the decision-making process?
What is the prospect?s timing for purchase or implementation?
What is the status of the prospect?s budget?
What is the size of the opportunity?

However, additional or more detailed criteria may be needed to define qualified leads at some companies. This starts with a company contact, who admits to a business problem (either latently or directly) that could be solved by a product and/or service you are selling. Here are a couple of examples of problems/solutions to use in qualified lead generation.

Problem: The company?s current disparate computer systems require employees to perform redundant data entry, which wastes their time and reduces efficiency.

Solution: Your software product would enable single data entry.

Problem: The company?s managers suspect it is paying too much for unused software licenses, but they don?t know for sure.

Solution: Your license management software tracks all software on a network so companies can determine what software is licensed and being used or not

In addition to having a business problem that your company?s products or services can solve, truly qualified leads must meet four other conditions:

They must have an established project in play.
They already have or believe they can find the money to buy a solution to the problem, or they are in the process of developing a budget.
They plan to purchase within a reasonable amount of time.
They have the power to get you in front of the appropriate final decision maker(s) when the time is right.

Step 2: Create a sales lead glossary

In addition to defining a qualified lead, consider creating a glossary of standard terms defining what your company considers to be a ?suspect,? a ?prospect,? an ?inquiry,? a ?response,? a ?qualified sales lead,? a ?qualified suspect,? a ?qualified prospect? and so forth.

Again, sales, marketing and management need to agree on the definition of each term, as this will help you avoid confusion later during qualified lead generation.

Step 3: Use a lead scoring approach

As you develop your lead qualification criteria, keep in mind that lead scoring can be an effective method of determining which leads are qualified and ready for sales follow up.

To score a lead, assign points based on how well the prospect meets each of your lead-qualification criteria. Consider the following example:

Funding, ready to go: 5 points
Budget in formulation: 3 points
No budget for project: 0 points
Is the decision maker: 5 points
Is the recommender: 3 points
Is an influencer: 1 point
Has a clear need for product: 5 points
Plans to buy within six months: 5 points
Plans to buy in one year or later: 1 point
Plans to buy $50,000 of product: 5 points
Plans to buy less than $100 of product: 0 points

To score the lead, add up all the points. Then, for example, those with 20 or more points are determined to be qualified sales leads; you should send them to your sales force.

Step 4: Drive sales opportunities with teamwork,

Meet with your peers in marketing, your company?s sales executives and your senior managers to learn about their definition of qualified sales leads. Use the lead-qualification criteria and scoring examples mentioned earlier in this article as discussion starters. Distill what you learn into a draft definition and run it by all the participants for further discussion and approval. If there is still disagreement, let your company?s senior sales management make the final decision.

With marketing, sales and management all speaking the same qualified sales leads language, your company can pull together to target and nurture the most promising leads. And boost sales and revenue as the result.

Evive Health Offers Employers Four Tips on Engaging Family ...

September 19, 2011 11:00 AM?Eastern Daylight Time?

CHICAGO?(BUSINESS WIRE)?More and more employers have acknowledged the benefits of offering wellness, preventive care and chronic care programs to their employees, with roughly 80 percent of mid- to large-sized groups now offering wellness initiatives. but, with the cost of health benefits expected to increase as much as 8.5 percent in 2012, many employers are looking for additional ways to manage their costs. ?One key is to increase wellness engagement among family dependents,? says Peter Saravis, CEO of Evive Health.

?only about half of employers today offer wellness plans to dependents, yet dependents typically represent about half of an organization?s overall medical costs?

?Only about half of employers today offer wellness plans to dependents, yet dependents typically represent about half of an organization?s overall medical costs,? said Saravis. ?For that reason alone dependents should be enrolled in wellness initiatives, including chronic care screenings and preventive care. Equally important is the fact that dependents influence the health behaviors of employees, their lifestyle at home and family medical decisions. a healthy home environment, where families are engaged in exercise, healthy eating and mutual support for health goals, can make a huge difference in an employee?s commitment to company wellness initiatives, and in a company?s annual medical costs.?

?Consequently, organizations which engage dependents have a better return on their wellness investment,? Saravis added. ?Family Health and Fitness Day marks a good opportunity to kick off new wellness engagement strategies for the whole family.?

Saravis offered employers four tips for increasing family engagement in wellness programs:

  1. Make sure spouses know the important role they play in the family?s health.Individuals need to believe they can achieve change, and a family support system is critical to that. Spouses can help eliminate barriers to change, enhance confidence and provide the encouragement to reach new health goals. Develop communications to spouses acknowledging the important role they play in the family?s health and educating them about the company wellness program and its goals. Invite them to bring the family to a wellness activity, such as a company health fair or a nutrition class, or to join the company walking club, gym program, health coaching and other programs.
  2. Invite dependents to participate in key wellness initiatives.Based on your organization?s goals, include dependents in key offerings designed to identify health risks and control health costs. Send targeted, personalized letters to spouses, inviting them to fill out a health risk assessment or take part in biometric screenings. be sure to give them a specific appointment date for a screening, along with specific information about where they will go, who they will see, and how much it will cost. this will help remove many barriers to participation. Also, rather than giving them an opt-in response mechanism, incorporate an opt-out response so they will have to take a specific action to cancel an appointment or change the date. Research shows that consumers are more likely to follow through on health needs when given a specific appointment and asked to opt out, rather than giving them a choice to opt in.
  3. Make sure dependents receive regular personalized health messages.Consistent, ongoing communications serve as constant reminders that dependents should be vigilant about health and wellness. Today?s engagement technologies automatically track member responses to messaging and then refine and execute new messaging and actionable opportunities based on monthly member health analytics.
  4. Solicit wellness testimonials from employees and their families.Leverage family success stories to influence change in others. Invite families to share their experiences in focus groups or at celebrations recognizing and rewarding achievements. Spread the good word through newsletters, mailers, emails or posting to your company wellness website.

Organizations that take steps to fully involve employees? spouses and other dependents in their wellness initiatives, preventive care and chronic care programs will be rewarded with a healthier, more engaged and more productive workforce, and the cost savings that result from such changes.

Nyad pushes toward Florida after rough night (AP)

HAVANA ? Endurance swimmer Diana Nyad pressed on Saturday, her pace a little slower after a rough night of painful Portuguese Man o' War stings but still making progress around a quarter of the way to Florida.

Nyad's team, which is updating fans and well-wishers throughout the world via social media, reported earlier Saturday that she was about 25 miles (40 kilometers) off the coast of Cuba. She is hoping to complete 103 miles (166 kilometers) to Florida, besting her own record for an open-water swim without a shark cage by about a half-mile (1 kilometer).

"It's been a challenging night and morning," her assistants said through Facebook, Twitter and her personal website. "Diana recovered from the multiple Portuguese Man O' War stings enough to swim ? but she is struggling right now. Her usual stroke pace, between 52 and 55 strokes per minute, has dropped to 48, but she is able to swim."

A subsequent tweet said, "Diana seems to be gaining strength. Her rest times per hour are less and less."

Nyad suffered stings on both arms, her face and her side. She later complained of breathing problems, and two doctors gave her a steroid shot, oxygen and other medicine, they said.

"Night turned into day as the dawn broke slowly on the horizon. 'You're doing better. I can see it,'" her chief handler told Nyad.

Nyad says her strategy for enduring the roughly 60 hours it should take her to swim from Cuba to Florida, testing the limits of human exhaustion at the age of 62, is to focus on one partial goal after another.

"The mental approach has to be to parcel it out. No one could swim the whole thing while thinking about the whole thing," she said on her website. "Till I get a glimpse of the final shore I can't start obsessing on it ? it's too far away, too nebulous ? I don't know where it is. So I'm going to take it night by day: first get through the nighttime and then get through the daytime, and then the nighttime again, and so on."

She told reporters Friday in Havana that she likes to sing songs inside her head to pass the hours. Among her favorites: The Beatles, Janis Joplin, and Bob Dylan.

Nyad is making her second attempt in as many months at the Cuba-Florida crossing, a lifelong dream that she first tried as a 28-year-old back in 1978, when she swam inside a steel shark cage for about 42 hours before ending the attempt.

This summer she's trying to do it cageless, instead relying on electronic equipment that surrounds her with a field that deters sharks.

An attempt in August fell short 29 hours in when, gasping for breath, Nyad threw in the towel after an 11-hour asthma attack she blamed on a bad reaction to a new medicine.

But she said the experience did not convince her that she was physically not up to the challenge, and Nyad, who insisted the problems had nothing to do with her advancing age, came to think of the aborted swim not as a failure but an unplanned dress rehearsal.

Though she had vowed there would be no second attempt, this week she flew to Cuba to take advantage of what she called a "magical window" of good weather and sea conditions. On Friday evening she jumped feet-first into the still waters off a Havana marina as her support team cheered and blew horns, and began stroking north toward the horizon.

Minutes earlier Nyad weighed herself and tipped the scales at 146 pounds (66 kilos). She said she expected to lose about 15 pounds (6.8 kilos) between now and her anticipated landfall in Florida on Monday morning.

Nyad is no stranger to painful stings suffered on marathon swims in the open ocean, and her assistants said she could recover and complete the journey.

"'It was scary' said (chief handler and close friend Bonnie) Stoll," according to one tweet. "But Diana is happy that this happened early while she is still at her strongest."

HP names eBay veteran Meg Whitman as new CEO (AP)

SAN FRANCISCO ? Hewlett-Packard has named Meg Whitman, the former eBay CEO and California candidate for governor, as its new CEO, pushing aside Leo Apotheker after just 11 months on the job.

Whitman got the top spot because there are few available people with the experience to run complex technology businesses, a source familiar with the matter told The Associated Press. Apotheker is being removed because the board lost confidence in his ability to lead the company long-term.

The management shake-up represents yet another turnaround strategy at one of Silicon Valley's oldest, but most publicly dysfunctional, firms. Since joining HP in November, Apotheker's strategic decisions had been drastic, and did little to inspire confidence. HP's stock fell nearly 50 percent during his time at the helm. It dropped about 5 percent Thursday.

(AP) ? In one of the bloodiest days of Yemen's uprising, government troops backed by snipers and shelling attacked a square full of Yemeni protesters Saturday and battled with pro-opposition forces in the capital, killing at least 40 people and littering the streets with bodies.

The violence signaled an accelerated attempt by President Ali Abdullah Saleh and his loyalists to crush their rivals and tighten his grip on the country after his return a day earlier from Saudi Arabia, where he has been undergoing treatment for the past three months for wounds suffered in an assassination attempt.

One of Saleh's top rivals ? Maj. Gen. Ali Mohsen al-Ahmar ? called for international help, asking the U.S. and other regional powers to rein him in. He warned that Saleh is pushing the country into civil war and compared him to the Roman emperor Nero, burning down his own city.

In a strongly worded statement, al-Ahmar called Saleh a "sick, vengeful soul" who treats Yemen like his personal estate.

"With his return, Yemen is experiencing sweeping chaos and the harbingers of a crushing civil war which this ignorant man is determined to ignite," said al-Ahmar, who was once a close ally of Saleh but early on in the uprising joined the opposition along with the 1st Armored Division he commands.

Sanaa has become a city divided between rival gunmen, with barracks and roadblocks manned by men in different uniforms indicating their loyalties. The city's streets have become too dangerous for the residents to venture out. Many took cover in basements because of the ongoing thuds of mortars during fighting that has killed at least 140 people the past week.

The turmoil is a blow to US efforts to find a stable transfer of power to ensure the continued fight against al-Qaida militants in Yemen, who Washington says constitute the most dangerous branch of the terror network. With the country spiraling deeper into disorder, al-Qaida linked militants have already seized control of entire towns in southern Yemen beyond their traditional strongholds.

Saleh, who has clung to power despite nearly eight months of protests and the June 3 assassination attempt, abruptly returned to Yemen on Friday. Street battles that reignited a week earlier in Sanaa rapidly escalated, widening to include the most determined attack by Saleh's forces on al-Ahmar's military units, anti-government tribesmen and the unarmed protesters themselves.

Regime forces on Saturday pounded the protest camp in Sanaa's Change Square where thousands were massed, as they have been nearly daily since February in peaceful protests demanding the end of Saleh's 33-year rule. Mortar shells blasted in the square, setting a number of tents on fire. Snipers on nearby rooftops fired down methodically on protesters dashing for cover.

"I was terrified when I saw one protester who left the tent running toward us as he heard the mortars, only to be shot in the chest by a sniper and fall to the ground before my eyes," said Samir al-Mukhlafi, a protest leader.

Republican Guard troops and Central Security forces, led by Saleh's son Ahmed, fired anti-aircraft guns and rocket-propelled grenades down streets near the square in battles with soldiers loyal to al-Ahmar protecting the protesters. The shelling wrecked several houses, witnesses said.

At one field hospital in the square, the body of a protester cut in two by mortar blasts was brought in. At least 28 protesters and one of the soldiers guarding them were killed Saturday, and 54 people were wounded, said Mohammed al-Qabati, a medic at the field hospital.

The intensity of the fighting forced ambulance crews to leave many of the bodies in the streets, he said, and motorcycles were bringing in the wounded.

"There are three bodies lying on the ground that we can't pick up because of snipers on the roof," said al-Qabati.

A prominent Yemeni human rights center said the violence left the impoverished country of over 24 million on the verge of collapse, urging the international community to stop the bloodshed.

"The situation in Yemen is becoming catastrophic," a statement by the Yemen Observatory for Human Rights, describing fighting between army units, security forces and tribesmen, the targeting of protesters and random killings of civilians in their homes or on the streets.

In the northwest of the capital, Sanaa, mortar shells rained down on the headquarters of the Al-Ahmar's 1st Armored Division. Eleven of al-Ahmar's troops were killed and 112 were wounded, according to Abdel-Ghani al-Shimiri, a spokesman for the soldiers.

An official in al-Ahmar's office said his troops will remain only on the defensive and won't go after Saleh's troops. The official said al-Ahmar conveyed the message to diplomats in Sanaa, who are apparently trying to contain the violence.

If al-Ahmar were to try to go on the offensive and move directly against Saleh and his leadership, that would likely escalate the violence even more. In his statement, al-Ahmar called on the neighboring Gulf countries, the United States, and the international community to deter Saleh, "stop his irresponsible behavior that aims to ignite a civil war that would have repercussions on the whole region."

On a third front, Saleh's troops fought anti-government tribesmen in the capital's Hassaba district, where 18 tribal fighters have been killed the past two days, according to a statement Saturday from tribal elders.

Hassaba is a stronghold of Yemen's most powerful tribal confederation, the Hashid, led by Sheik Sadeq al-Ahmar, another Saleh foe. He is not related to Maj. Gen. al-Ahmar.

Eight government troops were also killed and dozens wounded, said Interior Minister Gen. Mutahar al-Masri. He did not specify when or where the casualties occurred.

Violence also shook the southern city of Taiz, home to one of the strongest waves of anti-Saleh protests, and at least one protester was killed there, a medical official said.

In response to the violence, the Gulf Cooperation Council ? the alliance of Saudi Arabia and five other energy-rich nations ? called for a cease-fire and urged Saleh to immediately sign a power transfer deal proposed by the group.

"The security and humanitarian situation in Yemen can't take any more delays," a statement issued by the group, currently in New York, said.

The GCC's accord, which is backed by the U.S., would require Saleh to resign and transfer his powers to the vice president in return for immunity from any prosecution. Saleh endorsed the deal several times only to balk at signing at the last minute.

Abdullah Obal, an opposition leader, said international pressure appears to be the best way to push Saleh to step down and stop the fighting. But he said a major obstacle to any resolution and end to the violence was the control of Saleh's family ? particularly his son Ahmed and several nephews ? over much of the armed forces.

"We can't move a single step ahead without dissolving the armed forces, which will remain a sword threatening any resolution, because they only take orders from him," said Obal.

Yemen's uprising began in February as the unrest spreading throughout the Arab world set off largely peaceful protests in this deeply unstable corner of the Arabian Peninsula. Saleh's government responded with a heavy crackdown that has killed hundreds.

On Saturday, Saleh met with senior security leaders and ordered an end to all display of arms around the capital. Despite the order, there was no sign of any change on the ground.

Opposition spokesman Mohammed al-Sabri held Saleh directly responsible for the killings.

"It's as if he was unleashed from a cage and came out to retaliate," al-Sabri said. "This man deals with Yemen as if he's a gang leader, not a leader of a nation."

Top 10 Oktoberfests outside Germany

Not every Oktoberfest reveler will know they're toasting the 19th-century marriage of a Bavarian crown prince as they guzzle beer and bratwurst for two weeks each autumn. But that's where the tradition started and, though its roots are still in Munich, the entire world has since joined in on the celebrations. Online adviser Cheapflights provides its top 10 Oktoberfest celebration outside Germany from Ho Chi Minh City to Dublin.

1. Kitchener-Waterloo, Ontario, Canada
Canadians pull out all the stops for nine days each autumn to create the largest Oktoberfest celebration outside of Munich. Based in Ontario's twin cities, Kitchener-Waterloo Oktoberfest is a celebration the entire family can enjoy; the German extravaganza offers more than 40 family and cultural events, including the "World's Most Dangerous Bocce Ball Tournament." The celebration culminates at the Thanksgiving Day Parade, a televised spectacle of floats, entertainers and marching bands broadcast across the country. Dates: October 7-16

2. Hong Kong
The thriving expat community in Hong Kong has done a fine job - for 19 years now - of importing lederhosen and sauerkraut for a waterfront Oktoberfest at the beginning of each November, sponsored by the Marco Polo Hongkong Hotel. This year will be especially festive, as the Marco Polo German Bierfest celebrates its 20th anniversary. Expect three straight weeks of lively debauchery (last year, nearly 40,000 guests crammed into the traditional tent for live music and pork knuckles). The real question isn't whether or not you should go. It's "How many 1-liter beer steins can I fit in my suitcase home?" Dates: October 21-November 12

3. Blumenau, Brazil ... a mini Munich
Though Oktoberfests are celebrated all over Brazil each October, it's Blumenau's that provides attendees with a quintessential German aesthetic. In 1850, German immigrants founded the town, situated in Santa Catarina in southern Brazil. And it's obvious: the German Village (Vila Germ?nica) in the city center features German-style buildings that take visitors out of Brazil and drop them smack-dab in the middle of Bavaria. And in October, that means Oktoberfest. A reported 700,000 visitors annually flood the town to eat, drink and dance - to an oompah-samba fusion, we assume. Dates: October 6-23

4. Brisbane, Australia
The upside of opting for Brisbane's Oktoberfest instead of Munich's is the former's spectacular spring weather. And, the sheer joy that comes with vacationing in Queensland, of course. The Aussies do it up right for two weekends each October at Oktoberfest Brisbane, held at the RNA Showgrounds. Reserve a Bavarian VIP Table and invite seven friends (the table seats eight) for an elevated view of the space, a full spread of specialty German dishes, sausages and pretzels, and take-home Oktoberfest beer steins. Bottoms up! Dates: October 7-9 & 14-16

5. Stockholm, Sweden
Beer festivals are well unerway in Norway, Denmark, Iceland, and throughout Scandinavia by the end of each September, but it's Stockholm's Beer & Whisky Festival - also known as Stockholm Oktoberfest - that's made the cut in this case. Swedes add whisky to the mix for two consecutive weekends, giving visitors the chance to try libations from nearly 100 exhibitors. Sign up for beer and whisky "schools," where novices and seasoned drinkers alike get the chance to learn from experts in Level I and II classes. Thirty-four thousand attendees took part in the festivities at Congress Center last year, so be sure to reserve your tickets soon. Dates: September 29-October 1 & October 6-8

6. Cincinnati, Ohio, United States
The largest U.S. Oktoberfest is situated in none other than - Ohio? It's true, East Coast skeptics: Oktoberfest Zinzinnati is a no-nonsense weekend of fantastic beer, food and entertainment. Schnitzel, pretzels and strudel are washed down with 1.6 million ounces of beer annually. Stock up on complimentary souvenir mugs as you sample Spaten, Erdinger and Konig Ludwig beers and stroll along the streets of downtown Cincinnati. In your food coma, make sure to catch the "Running of the Wieners" and the "World's Largest Chicken Dance" on Sunday at Fountain Square. Dates: September 17-18

7. Dublin, Ireland
Swap the Guinness for Erdinger this fall at Oktoberfest Dublin, one of the many beer festivals happening around the Emerald Isle. Free for all attendees, the ode to Bavaria features a mouthwatering menu of bratwurst, sp?tzle, Burgundian ham and other traditional German dishes. Visitors eager to stay late are required to purchase a 6? wristband, guaranteeing a hearty meal to help soak up the wheat beer in the wee hours. One euro from every wristband sold helps disadvantaged children from Dublin - an excuse in itself to raise a glass. Dates: September 22-October 9

8. Denver, Colorado, United States
When Samuel Adams is the official sponsor of an Oktoberfest, it's healthy to question the German celebration's authenticity. In this case, though, J?germeister is also a major sponsor - and so we're in. Oktoberfest Denver kicks off with a ceremonial tapping of a Sam Adams Oktoberfest keg of beer, and continues for two full weekends of themed costumes, live music and tasty cuisine. Coloradans and the 250,000 visitors who stop by each year take competition very seriously: the Stein Hoisting Competition starts on the first Friday with pre-qualifying rounds and continues for two weekends until the strongest - and hopefully soberest - contenders throw down on the following Saturday night on the German Stage. Dates: September 16-18 & 23-25

9. Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam
Sacrifice a water puppet show or a trip to the Reunification Palace in Ho Chi Minh City this October for a hearty helping of German music and food. The German Business Association adds legitimacy to this lederhosen-clad party, acting as its official sponsor. Oktoberfest Vietnam, held at the Windsor Plaza Hotel, features German games, nightly raffles, all-you-can-eat food, and - of course - beer, that last year attracted more 14,000 guests. A tad smaller than Munich's guest list of 6 million, Saigon's offers a smaller-scale version of a traditional beer garden. Dates: October 7-8 & 11-15

10. Windhoek, Namibia
Namibia's capital honors its colonial German roots every year at the country's largest sports club, Sport Klub Windhoek. Rowdy crowds chow down on authentic German cuisine over a fun-filled weekend, serenaded by oompah bands flown in from the ex-Motherland itself. Make sure your camera is on hand, as waitresses compete to see who can carry the most steins of beer. Join expats and locals alike to wash knockwurst, Wiener schnitzel and Bavarian pretzels down with Windhoek Lager, a Euro pale lager that's made its mark worldwide. Cheers! Dates: October 28-29
