Domestic Violence Awareness Month is a nationwide event designed to educate, inform, increase awareness and provide support to those who have been affected by domestic violence.
In conjunction with the month, the Sexual Assault and Violence Education personal counseling center, also known as S.A.V.E. will be participating in the nationwide Clothesline Project.
?I hope that with this event students will be able to see that domestic violence is a serious and that we are here trying to make a change,? Kimbrlei McCain, a junior psychology major from Chelsea? and Peer Educator for S.A.V.E, said.
The event will be held on October 4th. A clothesline will be setup on the main quad, students will have the opportunity to decorate a shirt. Each shirt will represent a particular experience that student might have experienced with domestic violence.
Students are asked to donate shirts of any size, plain or multi-colored into the box outside of the student government association office.
Students do not have to be victims of domestic violence to design a shirt or be involved. Simply knowing of someone who has been affected and finding a way to express that experience on a shirt is enough.
?Im actually really excited to be helping other people in need,? Jessica New, a sophomore psychology major from Huntsville, said.
New, went on to say ?I think domestic violence is an issue that is easily over looked and needs more attention. Also, people who are going through some type of domestic violence should really understand that there is help out there and I am a part of that help.?
?Domestic violence is not always recorded but always occurring,? Drew Pendergrass a senior pre-law major from Dothan, said. ?Sadly I feel it is the least important thing peoples mind.?
Pendergrass also expressed that domestic violence is very broad and students should evaluate their relationships and look for certain warning signs that might alert them of being a victim of domestic violence.
?We all know domestic violence is terrible, so I am really hoping to see as many shirts as possible on October 4th,? McCain said.
