That implies to me a job elsewhere. If that is the case the best advice is to seek a professional resume service. A well tooled resrume CV is crucial. Most think their's is ok, but it likely isn't. Honestly, I had mine 're-done' and I am convinced it was the best move I could have made. It will get your foot in the door for an interview, the rest is up to you. |

Never turn down responsibility is good advice. However, like mhc said, you have to know your limits.
Another good piece of advice I got from my father was "do the stuff no one else will do." This works especially well at the beginning of your career. You will get a reputation as a "can do" type of person. However, there are pros and cons to this. Some will resent the attitude, mainly some of your peers. Supervisors and Managers will appreciate it as long as you stay humble about it. So, when a real opportunity comes around they will think of you. Why? Because you have already established that you are willing to do what needs to get done. (If you end up helping senior management, always let your direct supervisor know.) Also, another good piece of advice I've received is "Never let them know you are happy." A variant of this could be "Never let them get you down." This is important if you are serious about promotion. You will get knocked for it. This has worked well for me for the last 12 years in my organisation. I have to admit, though, that I have probably reached my limit. I don't believe I can take on more responsibility. Also, my natural cynicism has started to finally take over. I was able to push it aside for quite a while, but I've kind of lost steam (I guess that is not useful advice, but more of a caution in case you have serious ambitions). 1. Work very hard at something that comes easily to you.
2. Never get married to a company because no company is married to you. 3. Simply following your passion does not guarantee wealth or success. It takes more than that. Invest your time actively and your money passively. |

Not so much advice that I received, but I can certainly credit a certain attitude to my success, and that's the "I can do that" attitude. When something new needs to be learned, put up your hand and say "I can do that" (i.e., I'll figure that out). Of course, know your limitations when you say "I can do that"... !!! See
"A CEO desperately needs to find someone that knows how to speak 7 languages."
The other thing that took me a long time to learn is that you shouldn't do things because people say "you're good at that". It's nice to be needed. But if it's not something you enjoy (and it's something that other people don't enjoy) they'll be full of praise for you doing such a good job. One day you'll realize that you don't enjoy your work and you don't have time to do the work that gets you ahead. Learn to say "no" and share the grunt work around. |

When someone (a colleague) has a better idea or better solution to a problem, be humble and wise enough to admit that their solution is "better than yours".
A lesson learned from 34 years as a Hospital CEO. You would be amazed at the number of great ideas that emerge. Best wishes. |

Here's a couple that have been truthful to me:
1. You will always get screwed at some point in your worklife. 2. Always look for a better job so you are in a position to move when YOU want vs. having employers get rid of you. 3. No one is indispensible. 4. In the end a job is just that a job. You want to like what you are doing, but have to love it as that is what your personal life is all about. 5. Grass is always greener on the opposite side. I know these are not the motivational and good feelings lines, but like it or not it will protect you from being surprised "Wow, I never so it coming" Good luck. p.s. I am still in the same job as I first started, but a day doesn't go by I am not prepared to walk out if the situation isn't right for me. |

Never say out loud at work: that's not my job
After 12 years of managing people, and mostly promoting from within... The person who only does the minimal, watches the clock and runs out the door at closing time is never the one who is promoted. The person who learns the ins and outs of their job, offers solutions, has a good attitude, is competent and gets along with people is the one I look to promote, or educate to get them ready. Don't need to be the person who needs to be constantly managed to do the job. Be reliable, dependable, get along with people, learn what other people do within the company. Be willing to educate yourself, by reading books on say management or customer service. |

That is true. However, I have encountered plenty of people who behave like they don't want to get a promotion only to hear them complain when they have been looked over. The statement is always "Well how come no one asked me? I would have liked that job!" Many people think that promotions should just be handed out due to seniority, not performance. |

most of it has been well covered above already.
I would just add: - you don't get a second chance to make a first impression. - no one ever wrote on their tombstone, I wish I had worked harder. Work hard but enjoy life as well. |
