Unexpected passenger: Car thief steals sleeping baby

FORT WORTH - A man stole a car with a sleeping toddler inside Thursday afternoon.

Fabiola Garcia said the thief jumped into her still-running car when she stopped at a garage sale at about 3:30 p.m. in South Henderson Street in Fort Worth, Texas.

Her son, 2-year-old Ricardo Calderon, was sleeping inside the car.

"They came across the street and told me the little boy was in the car, and I called the police back and told them it was a kidnapping," witness Bobby Duncan said.

More news from NBCDFW.com

Police say the car thief didn't go very far before stopping the car and letting little boy out about 15 minutes later.

Garcia said she thanks God that Ricardo was not harmed.

The stolen car was still missing late Thursday. Police were searching for the thief.

I'm thinking of starting a blog...: Speak Up {Writing Prompt}

This is not an easy topic for me.

There are so many things I would LOVE to speak up about but feel like I can't at the moment.

I would love to speak up about what it is really like to live with someone with a brain injury.

I would love to speak up about how stressful it is to bear the weight of responsibility for EVERYONE and EVERYTHING in our family.

I would love to speak up about the many (half crazy) ideas I have brewing in my head for how I am going to manage in the long term.

But.

Is it fair on Murray for me to talk about him on the blog? ?Even if he consents (which he does) - is he really understanding what he is consenting to? ?In a few days he will have forgotten that he consented....is that really consenting?

Even though there is a part of me that wants people to know how stressful it is to be the sole carer for my family - there is also a part of me that doesn't want to speak up about that. ?I like to just get on with the job rather than talk about how I feel about it. ?What I do want though is for people to 'get' what is really going on. ?To get that I am effectively a single parent. ?To get that I am Murray's carer rather than his wife. ?To get that my life is not like theirs - the same rules don't (and can't) apply. To get that this is a BIG deal.

I would love to tell you about the long term plans I have brewing but I worry that people will judge me. ?Murray does not function as a husband, father or even really as an adult in our house - yes we are married - but this is not a marriage marriage. ?So what am I to do?

What would you do?

I can almost feel all the Christians reading this getting ready to reach for the comment button to tell me that I can't leave. ?Don't panic. ?I'm not leaving.

But please know that those of us who are in marriages where we are carers for our spouses - rather than partners with them - are not in 'typical' marriages like other people. ?We are essentially on our own. ?It is hard work. ?By choosing to stay with our husbands and honour our marriage vows we are choosing a life of loneliness and frustration. ?The marriage vows say until death us do part - that is a LONG time - day in and day out - to be alone but have no one actually realise that you are on your own.

I think I probably should stop speaking up now.

Maybe it's better to keep quiet?

Opinion: Workplace-Giving Campaign's Shift to E-Giving Is Risky ...

January 24, 2013, 10:57 am

A proposed overhaul of the Combined Federal Campaign, the U.S. government?s workplace charity drive, could significantly reduce contributions by over-emphasizing new technology, a Washington Post columnist writes.

The Office of Personnel Management plan, now under review by the Obama administration, calls for eliminating cash, check, and money-order contributions in favor of giving by electronic means.

Joe Davidson, who writes the Post?s Federal Diary column, says the proposal is aimed at streamlining CFC operations, but he notes that in 2011, only 22 percent of the $272-million pledged came from electronic giving. Mr. Davidson quotes charity leaders who are concerned about the impact of shifting to exclusively electronic giving.

Dixie State College contemplates apology for past racism on campus

ST. GEORGE, Utah ? FOX 13 News has learned Dixie State College officials are contemplating issuing an apology next week for decades of racist incidents on campus.

It comes as the college is embroiled in a heated debate over whether to include the name ?Dixie? when the school becomes a university at the end of the month. Supporters say the name is tied to southwestern Utah?s founding when Mormon pioneers moved here to grow cotton. Opponents insist the word is rooted in the Civil War Confederacy and racism.

On Wednesday, an advertising firm hired by the college to survey a new name for the college presented its findings. An overwhelming number (83 percent) supported the name ?Dixie.? But Sorenson Advertising also noted it will be difficult to distinguish ?Utah?s Dixie? from ?Confederate Dixie.?

?Just because they?re living in southern Utah doesn?t mean that the word slavery and the Civil War didn?t exist,? said Jeanetta Williams, the president of the Salt Lake Chapter of the NAACP.

St. George community activists gave FOX 13 a number of pictures taken from 40 years of yearbooks at Dixie State College. Those yearbooks were entitled ?The Confederate.? They showed students hoisting the confederate flag, students performing skits in blackface, and even portraying slaves on parade floats.

Now, Dixie State College officials are considering an apology for those incidents dating back to the 1960s. At next week?s Board of Trustees meeting, school officials will choose a name and an ?acknowledgment? will be made.

?An acknowledgment will definitely come,? said Dixie State spokesman Steve Johnson. ?An apology could happen as well. Obviously, events that happened on this campus 30, 40, 50 years ago ? obviously, the activities and events that were portrayed in our yearbooks by students back then are obviously things that are socially unacceptable today.?

In recent years, Dixie State College has apparently been trying to bury its controversial past. They did away with the ?Rebel? mascot and became the ?Red Storm.? A few weeks ago, a statute on campus of Confederate soldiers was removed from campus.

?Even with the statues being gone, there?s Confederate memorabilia,? said Roi Wilkins, a Dixie State College student who opposes the ?Dixie? name. ?You go into the old gym and there?s (pictures of) guys wearing Confederate shirts. You?ve just got to get all that stuff out and say ?sorry,? and we?re good.?

Wilkins said a formal apology may not persuade him to embrace the name ?Dixie? in the school?s name, but it would help. The NAACP has already gone on record opposing the name for the future university.

?Just because they?re living in St. George and they?re used to having it called ?Dixie? doesn?t mean it will have to stay that way,? said Williams.

Supporters insist that whatever happened on the campus is ?in the past.? Some who spoke to FOX 13 after a series of names were unveiled decried ?political correctness? in the name controversy. St. George Mayor Dan McArthur, who backed a resolution by the city council insisting that ?Dixie? remain in the name, said he was unsure if an apology was necessary ? or if it would appease critics.

?That?s all a thing of the past,? McArthur told FOX 13. ?I think we?ve got to go forward with the positive things that we have, because none of us condone that.?

The names being recommended to the Board of Trustees are: Dixie State University, University of St. George, Utah Dixie University and Utah Dixie State University.

Community vote: Classification of 'Twitch-likes'

Hey folks,

I visited Trossen a couple of weeks ago, with Twitch, and in talking with Tyberius, it was decided to put it to the community as to how Twitch-likes should be classified for the Mech Warfare Competition. The fundamental issue comes down to the fact that the MW rules are based on number of legs, but do not define anything based on the number of feet or style of feet.

At stake are three questions: (1)) Do these bots get put in the same league as quads and bipeds, or in the open league (which has not really existed, but is reserved rovers and hexapods)? (2) Which scoring panel configuration - 4 full panels like a quad, or 2 full, 2 half like a biped? (3) Bipeds receive 15% extra hit points. We can give this to Twitch-likes, or not, or even do the opposite: e.g. -15% hit points (17 total).

Twitch throws a bunch of wrenches into the rules.

As currently built, Twitch has six separate points of contact with the ground. This could be configured as 2, 3, 4, or 5 points of contact. These "feet" are in two groups, with feet in a given group being fixed relative to each other. You could choose to consider these groups to be legs - two legs.

To illustrate the various feet configurations, pictures!

Top View

Six points of contact with current Twitch
Quad configuration - joining the lower legs
Two-foot configuration - outrageously shaped joined feet
Side view of making single feet for the quad.

The point to this is that while I can configure the feet in various bizarre ways so that it's technically 4-footed, or whatever, this kind of bot should probably just be classified separately.

There is also Jwatte's Little Walker. This uses a different foot configuration, but is the same principle of 3 servos locomotion via large footprint. While different, there is continuum of possible designs between Twitch and Little Walker. Thus in my opinion, they should fall under the same umbrella in the rules.

This design also lowers the cost of entry for MW. A $500 Dynamixel bot is very possible... Probably not a bad thing.

Finally there's the spirit of the rules. The MW competition aims to emulate the MW games of yore (and the new nifty looking MW Online). There's nothing like Twitch, or hexapods, or rovers in the MW lore, and that has been an added basis for the separate Open League. You can choose to factor that into your opinion...

I'm sure others have thoughts (JWatte was in a rush to get his in ). I encourage you to read others' thoughts, post your own. There's no rush to vote immediately on this, as discussion is good. I have however set the voting to end in 30 days... I'm planning on such a mech, and making a decision a couple months before MW gives me the chance to change my approach if needed . Poll options were my first go at it with the new forum layout, and apparently I can't edit them. Worst case, a new thread gets made if a glaring omission was made in the options.

Thanks for reading!

(Note, I got lazy and didn't discuss/document the style of walking that Twitch uses... If some feel the definition of walking is also necessary for debate, I can better document that with vid, if needed...)

'Everybody started running': 7 hurt as NYC crane collapses

By By Pei-Sze Cheng and Jonathan Dienst, NBCNewYork.com

NEW YORK -- A crane collapsed?at a New York City construction site Wednesday, injuring seven workers, authorities said.

Officials said the mobile crane unit collapsed shortly before 2:30 p.m. The construction site is behind the famed Pepsi-Cola sign in Long Island City, Queens.

Three construction workers were trapped under the crane and had to be extricated, an FDNY deputy chief on the scene said. The most seriously injured suffered broken bones.

'Everybody started running'
Carpenter Preston White said he was standing on scaffolding about 20 feet from the ground with some colleagues when the cable on the crane snapped while moving a stack of wood.

"You could hear the cable snap, and it recoiled back toward the crane," said White. "Everybody started running out of that way because that was all that was coming, the cable. And you heard a snap, and the next thing you know, the crane just buckled and it came crashing down."

"You could hear people screaming," he said. "You could hear people calling out, trying to find people. I was surprised I was still on the deck."

A 25-story residential building is being built on the site by developer TF Cornerstone.

More stories from NBCNewYork.com

Matthew Knell, who lives across from the construction site, said he "heard a big bang."

Randall Todd said he was walking his dogs nearby when he heard the sound of what he described as breaking metal.

He looked over and saw "the top horizontal arm of the crane dropping, but it folded on itself, accordion-style, including the vertical tower, which seemed to snap in half."

The cause of the collapse was not immediately clear.

In a statement, TF Cornerstone said:?"Site safety is always our first priority as it relates to construction, and we are cooperating fully with all relevant authorities to try and determine what caused this occurrence."

The work at the site was being carried out by subcontractor Cross Country Construction. The crane had been leased to Cross Country Construction by New York Crane.

China: Year of the Snake Could Sizzle

Thursday, January 10th, 2013
By George Leong, B.Comm. for Profit Confidential

China: Year of the Snake Could SizzleMany pundits continue to criticize Chinese stocks, saying China will collapse and face a hard landing?but I?m not one of them. In fact, I?m more optimistic for 2013. The country will be under new leadership with the goal to accelerate the country?s gross domestic product (GDP) growth over the next decade, and you should be there for the ride with some Chinese exposure in tow.

The Shanghai Composite Index (SCI) closed at 3.16% in 2012, following a strong end to the year. It was the first up year for the SCI after declining 21.7% in 2011 and 14.3% in 2010. Early on in 2013, the SCI is positive, and I expect an up year if all pans out.

China has managed to avoid the feared hard landing and is showing signs that growth is coming back, albeit slowly. The country appointed a new President and Premier at its 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, who will lead the country for the next decade. (Read ?Never Mind Obama and Romney; Watch for Jinping and Keqiang.?)

If things go well and China opens up more to the world stage, the next decade could be special for the country. The change at the helm comes at a critical juncture; the country is currently facing stalling economic growth after years of explosive GDP growth that propelled the country to overtake Japan to become the world?s second-largest economy.

China?s GDP growth is estimated to rise to rally back above 8.0%?8.5% in 2013, down from the previous 9.3% estimate, according to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (?OECD Cuts China GDP Forecast, Sees Policy Room To Back Growth,? MNI, November 27, 2012, last accessed January 9, 2013.) Of course, there is still risk and uncertainty, as the country?s economic recovery will be dependent on what happens in the eurozone over the next few years.

While many are ditching the country, I continue to be a Chinese bull looking forward. I feel the golden years for the country are still to come. Just consider the 1.3 billion people, the surging middle class, rising income levels, and the concerted government move to continue to drive the country?s economic turbines to expand the country?s power.

The HSBC Purchasing Managers? Index slowed in December, but manufacturing activity still came in at an expansionary 51.7, down from 52.1 in November. (?China services growth slows in December: HSBC PMI,? South China Morning Post via Reuters, January 4, 2012.)

Unlike the United States, China has ample cash reserves of over $3.0 trillion that it can use to pump up the economy, which is a key reason why I?m a huge supporter.

The outgoing government stressed its desire to power the Chinese economy forward and double GDP by 2020.

The selling in the top Chinese stocks listed in China and Asia has been overdone. If you want to play the top Chinese companies, or what I call ?China?s DOW stocks,? take a look at the iShares FTSE China 25 Index Fund (NYSEArca/TXI).

iShares FTSE China 25 Index Fund Chart

?If you are looking for more risk and return with more growth-oriented companies, take a look at the PowerShares Golden Dragon China (NYSEArca/PGJ).

PowerShares Golden Dragon China Chart

The bottom line is: I continue to like China longer-term. There is no doubt in my mind that the country could become a more influential and powerful country economically.

I'd like to reserve vamp two please, but I need the character sheet pmed to me because I'm on a kindle and I won$t have it done until tomorrow

Fill not your hearts with pain and sorrow, but remember me in every tomorrow. Remember the joy, the laughter, the smiles, I've only gone to rest a little while. Although my leaving causes pain and grief, my going has eased my hurt and given me relief. So dry your eyes and remember me, not as I am now, but as I used to be. Because, I will remember you all and look on with a smile. Understand, in your hearts, I've only gone to rest a little while.

Poet-performer Jayne Cortez dies in NY at age 78

(AP) ? Jayne Cortez, a forceful poet, activist and performance artist who blended oral and written traditions into numerous books and musical recordings, has died. She was 78.

The Organization of Women Writers of Africa says Cortez died of heart failure in New York on Dec. 28. She had helped found the group and, while dividing her time between homes in New York and Senegal, was planning a symposium of women writers to be held in Ghana in May.

Cortez was a prominent figure in the black arts movement of the 1960s and '70s that advocated art as a vehicle for political protest. She cited her experiences trying to register black voters in Mississippi in the early '60s as a key influence.

A native of Fort Huachuca, Ariz., she was raised in the Watts section of Los Angeles. She loved jazz since childhood and would listen to her parents' record collection. Musicians including trumpeter Don Cherry would visit her home and through them she met her first husband, Ornette Coleman, one of the world's greatest jazz artists. They were married from 1954 to 1964.

Her books included "Scarifications" and "Mouth On Paper," and she recorded often with her band the Firespitters, chanting indictments of racism, sexism and capitalism. Its members included her son, drummer Denardo Coleman, and several other members of Ornette Coleman's electronic Prime Time band, guitarist Bern Nix and bassist Al McDowell.

Cortez, who described herself as a "jazz poet," performed all over the world and her work was translated into 28 languages. At the time of her death, she was living with her second husband, the sculptor Melvin Edwards.

Four dead after police standoff in Aurora, Colo.

AURORA, Colo. (AP) ? Four people, including an armed suspect, died during an hours-long police standoff Saturday at a Colorado townhome, authorities said.

An Aurora police department SWAT team responded after shots were heard at the home at about 3 a.m., Aurora police Sgt. Cassidee Carlson said. Investigators said two men and a woman appeared to have been killed before officers arrived.

The suspect shot at police who approached the front of the home with an armored vehicle and tear gas at about 8:15 a.m., and he was killed when he fired at officers from a second-story window about 45 minutes later, Carlson said. It wasn't known if officers shot the suspect or if he shot himself.

A fifth person escaped unharmed and called police to report that she saw three people inside the home who "appeared lifeless," said Carlson, who declined to elaborate about the woman's escape.

A motive for the killings was unknown. Police wearing gloves and carrying evidence bags were going over the crime scene.

"We're just getting in there with our crime scene detectives, so obviously we'll have to determine if it was our rounds or his rounds," Carlson said.

Police declined to release the name of the suspect or victims.

"We have an idea of who they are, but we obviously want to confirm their identities with the coroner," said Carlson, who declined to release the relationship between the victims and the shooter.

Officers evacuated neighbors' homes during the standoff and used a bullhorn to communicate with the gunman, urging him to surrender.

"After we arrived on scene, there were no more shots fired up until he fired at us," Carlson said. "During this time he was all over the house. He moved furniture. He was throwing things. He was agitated. He was irrational."

A large front window was missing in the modest two-story townhome, the window's mini-blinds in disarray. Bullet holes marked two upstairs windows, and neighbors milled about outside.

The shootings occurred about four miles southeast of the Aurora Mall, where 12 people were killed and dozens were wounded by a gunman at a midnight showing of "The Dark Knight Rises" on July 20. The man charged in that shooting, James Holmes, goes to court Monday for a preliminary hearing in which prosecutors will lay out their case against him.

Aurora, just east of Denver, is one of Colorado's largest and most diverse cities with more than 335,000 residents. It is home to Buckley Air Force Base as well as the sprawling University of Colorado Health Sciences Center campus.

It can be fun and even exciting to work with MLM as it is so new. Others may just be hoping to earn enough money to stay afloat in tough times. Always stay motivated and work hard to bring in more profit.

An hour is long enough for a meeting. You don?t want potential partners to worry about the time investment the business requires.

Educate yourself as much as possible regarding your product. Passion for your product can pass to your buyers. If you believe in your product, more people are likely to sign up for your network. When you give a review about your product, it will come from a genuine place. Potential clients will sense this honesty.

TIP! Use any opportunity to you can to expose your product to your target market. You have to give people the opportunity to see your product before you can make a sale.

Networking marketing is a business. You must work hard, have patience, and be persistent to have success as a network marketer. Profitable network marketers have treated the business as a full-time job. To start off on the right foot, be sure to learn as much about multi-level marketing as you can.

Mimic successful characteristics that you see in others when you embark on your MLM career. Before long you will be acting and thinking with the same mindset as those independent distributors and your success rate should dramatically improve.

Approach multi-level marketing as if you are helping people, by supplying your products versus selling things to make money. Rather than concentrating on how great your product is, focus on what it can do to solve the problems of customers. Obviously people will be more willing to buy your product if they feel they really need it.

TIP! In network marketing, make sure that you take a business professional approach. If you expect to work just a few hours a week and earn a lot of money, you will not be successful.

You should always dress nicely before going to work, even if it is at home. Even if you plan to work at your computer all day, this will give you a professional feeling as you work, while allowing you to go to a quick meeting if necessary.

Encourage the people in your network to control the conversation. If you get as much knowledge about them as you can by using social media and other forms of contact, you will be better poised to promote your products. You then know about their wants and needs, as well as their dreams and fears, and can directly pitch to them.

Learning is the single best thing you can keep doing to expand your multilevel marketing efforts. Take a few moments each do to read about subjects that can improve your business. If you can attend webinars of successful network marketers, either from your own company or others, they have a lot to teach you. The more informed you are, the better you are able to rely on yourself and be a reliable source of help to others.

TIP! Do not take any shortcuts when using a network marketing approach, since this can hurt you in the long run. While there may be times when you want to do things in a half-hearted way, you must realize that only through diligence and commitment will you create a winning marketing strategy.

Part of your decision on whether to join a specific multi-level marketing program should be based on their compensation systems. You should look for a plan that gives you high returns, offers several streams of income and provides a residual income. Also, your first sales usually go to your sponsor. This will be helpful to you and allow you to find more leverage.

Learning from ?hiccups? in your strategy is a fantastic way to keep moving forward. Analyze how you failed and take the information learned to heart. When you study what doesn?t work, you know what to eliminate and can place more emphasis on things that do work.

You should make your multi-level marketing lead think that your sole purpose is to assist them. You should inform them of the methods that this system will use to generate money for them, assist their lives, and provide them with ease of mind.

TIP! Pencil in some time off to spend with friends and family. This will reduce your stress levels and maintain good relations.

One thing you should be sure of when you begin your MLM campaign is the compensation package. It is important you understand what might be available to you, your team members and your partners. Once you are aware of the specific compensation terms, you can quickly decide if an opportunity is right for you.

To really be a leader in the multilevel marketing field, you need to have the desire to help other people with their success. When you find yourself helping customers succeed with the tools you give them, you will see your profits begin to rise.

When you venture into multilevel marketing, the most effective thing that you can do is set your mind on success. You must make the same type of commitment to your business as you would if you were operating a store in your neighborhood. If you don?t consider your business ?real?, then it never will be.

TIP! Make specific short-term goals to achieve long-term success. Although your professional ?big picture? may extend in scope across many years, you should nonetheless evaluate your current marketing activities at least every 3 months.

Through all these various types of media and social connections, you now have a way to market your ideas or products without hitting a stop. There will never be a shortage of new names, ideas, or products on the market. If you consider these tips, you can grow your business into an empire!

GaryMoller.com - Health, Fitness - Naturally!: Exclusive Report: The ...

There has been a lot of debate lately about the images promoting New Zealand to the rest of the world:

"Clean, Green New Zealand" and "100% Pure".

Many argue that while New Zealand sure is "Green", it is far from "Clean" or "100% Pure".

For the first time ever, this blog brings you the report by D N Dempsey of his experiences, over many years, with the use of hormone herbicides on his Central North Island.

In his report, Don describes the devastation to his health and the death of livestock that can only be the result of repeated exposure to hormone sprays that accumulated in pasture soil. ?Page ten of his report has the blood tests of thyroid function of affected and unaffected cattle that finally solved the mystery of why his cattle were so unwell and why so many were dying.

Sadly, this report has gone nowhere, officially. ?I guess it may be a case of being a health issue that nobody in New Zealand wants to know about! ?Here it is, below, for you to read in full:

HAZELBLUE FARM PHENOXY REPORT

Don's report is further confirmation that we are not the "Clean" country we would like the rest of the World to believe we are. ?

When I see the green, rolling pastures of New Zealand, I see millions of liters of herbicide. ?When I was a student I used to work on the farms of the South Waikato. ?One of my jobs involved grubbing thistle and ragwort. ?Nowadays, hard labour has been replaced by herbicides.

Just how safe are these herbicides? ?Essential they may be for modern farming practices; but are they ruining our health?

The evidence grows by the day that these herbicides are far from safe. ?It was during the Vietnam War that we?got our first glimpses?of how harmful these chemicals may be.??Millions of gallons of Agent Orange were sprayed on the forests and paddy fields of the North and South, causing a surge in cancers and birth defects among those who were exposed to the herbicide. Second and third generations continue to suffer from the genetic damage.

Evidence grows stronger by the day that these hormone sprays damage endocrine systems, including the thyroid, as reported by Don Dempsey.

"In an alarming new study published in the journal Food and Chemical Toxicology, researchers from The Committee for Research & Independent Information on Genetic Engineering (CRIIGEN) reported on the results of a 2 year feeding study in rats given either NK603 Roundup-tolerant genetically modified maize, cultivated with or without Roundup, and Roundup alone, at levels permitted in drinking water and GM crops in the United States." Please go here to read the complete article, including references.

Roundup is used by the millions of liters here in New Zealand to keep us "Green".

I have completed a Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis for Don Dempsey (Don has given me permission to write about it here). ?The laboratory reported the following for him:

FAST METABOLISM (TYPE #4)

** Sympathetic Dominance

** Tendency Toward Decreased Thyroid Function (decreased secretion of hormones)

** Tendency Toward Decreased Adrenal Activity (decreased secretion of hormones)

The current tissue mineral pattern is indicative of a fast metabolic rate (Fast Metabolism, Type #4).?Even though the metabolic rate is considered fast, this patient may be experiencing adrenal and thyroid

insufficiency.

This is consistent with the thyroid issues that Don has reported over the years.

  • New Zealand may be "Green" but it is far from "Clean".
  • Hormone herbicides, including the crops that are bred to be resistant to them, GMO corn, for example, can have devastating effects on animals and humans, including cancer, birth defects endocrine disorders, such as those affecting thyroid.
  • More research needs to be done to determine the safety of these chemicals and associated GMO herbicide resistant crops.
  • We need to invest more into finding and introducing clean alternatives for pasture production.
  • In the meantime, there is sufficient evidence to warrant severely limiting the use of these herbicides.

Thanks, Don, for allowing me to publish your report.

In publishing Don's report, am I being a New Zealand Patriot or am I a Traitor?

a year--provided you have a minimum GPA of 2.6. If you fall under that, you would still have to sit out a year. According to this CBS article, it can be voted upon in August.

    Will certainly change things.
Could be a little crazy actually.

On the other hand- why penalize a kid who wants to go somewhere else.
They are already getting used by universities to make millions in the BCS conferences.
Let 'em play and go to school where they want.
You do not have to sit out a year from activity if you transfer from NYU Theater Dept to Univ of Iowa Theater Dept if you transfer.

I don't like the idea at all. Can you imagine the shuffling that will occur? It'll turn into a free agent market of coaches recruiting players from other schools, etc. whimsical commits from kids that programs want to build around that get pissed about something stupid and leave, etc. No thanks.

I'm against it sort of, and for mostly selfish reasons. I think kids are already too impatient as is and removing the only hurdle to transfer would open floodgates.

Now coaches may have to allot PT to freshman unhappy with there roles, or don't and risk a rash decision to transfer. How would midseason transfers work? Could you imagine coaches who would put out feelers to kids languishing on the bench?

On the other hand, need a big because your center jumped to the NBA? There he is, 3 deep at Kentucky.

I just don't think most 18-20 year old kids are capable of adequately weighing the pros and cons, especially with all those NBA voices in their ears.

Oh well, I'm sure it will be better than I expect. Always is.

Even now, only athletes in baseball, basketball, football and hockey face the requirement to sit out a year after transfer. In general, I think they should be free to move without penalty. The NCAA claims to exist for the benefit of the student athlete, and almost every rule they have works against those interests and in the favor of the institutions.

rebid every player for every year.

I also think that it is in the best interest of maturity if kids have consequences to quitting. Coach yells at a kid in practice, he is more likely to stick it out knowing there is a year of sitting out on the line when you transfer.

Sitting out a year doesnt keep the kid from going wherever he wants, whenever he wants, it just means that the kid really has to want to switch schools to do it.

I think that'll turn out to be a big mistake and will only last a few years if implemented. It will create too much chaos. There are already tons of transfers every year. What happens if, say, 7 guys want to transfer from a program in one year? Can you imagine? Certain schools might not even be able to put a team on the court.

I'm all for forcing the Universities to pay college football and basketball athletes (a decent, equal stipend) but giving them the freedom to change schools without a penalty will end up being a nightmare. Get them paid if you want to support them.

Well the coaches have the option to change schools ANY year, even with long contracts.....Universities get to cancel coaches and cancel schollys to players ANY minute they want to,or at least annually. They dont seem to bring much more maturity to our system set up by the Universities....Ask the Penn State program about this.

The coaches are also adults and paid employees of the institution they coach for. It is expected they will make more rational decisions than an 18 year old. There are always exceptions like PSU.

It's hard enough to recruit kids in the first place, let alone having to recruit them again every year even after they are on campus.
